dgatwood said:If you got the standard Fat Head, the highs are probably the direct result of the crappy Chinese transformer. That said, looking at their PDFs of response, the stock transformer looks like it has better high end response than the Lundahl, which would be very surprising given what I've seen from transformers in other Chinese ribbons. Dunno.
When I bought my Fat Head, they were not offering the other transformer options or I may have gone with one of them instead. As far as the high end response chart, the stock may show a better high frequency response, but my gut tells me that the Lundahl or the conemag transformer versions may have a sweeter or more usable high frequency response. PLus my console has amazing EQ on it and with the way many ribbons seem to accept a little EQ, I once again have no doubt that I would be happier with the nicer transformer. In the end however for under $200 I am pretty happy with what I got. Like I said, it is not going to replace my Royer, but I found that the stock Fat Head at least sounded much better to me than an sm57, e609, PL20 or an md421. Not that those others really sounded bad, but I love the way ribbons sound on guitar cabs especially. The Royer R121 though through my Chandler TG2 and either a Distressor or an old DBX 165a sounds amazing. I don't know how I would even want to change that sound regardless of budget unless maybe I swapped the compressor with an actual 1176 (not the UAD plugs) or even an API compressor.
