i'm very new with these recording things. i want to record a good sound, but don't know what do i have to do.
actually i have recorded one song of mine, but i ain't satisfied with the sound result. and don't want to continue recording with the recent based.
i'm using a computer based on cakewalk sonar with a common soundblaster sound card. just like everyone's, my songs require guitar, bass, drum, vocal, keyboard and perhaps others inputs.
books does answer problems, but they don't mention the details equipment. like a sound card, i know i gotta buy a new sound card, but i don't know what sound card would that be.

unfortunaly i have a budget no more of $2400.
so what do you think? anyone want to share any tips for me?
i'm planning to buy
(1) M-Audio Quattro,
(2) a mixer...ehmm..mackies would be nice huh (do i really have to buy this for gettin good sound on recording? or mixers would be worth only in mixing?)
(3) shure beta 87A for the condenser vocal mic.

Another abang (guy) from Indonesia! :)

welcome....

Perhaps you can share with us your current setup and we can suggest what is suitable for you...

will you be recording live drums?

thanx 4 your reply king man. you're a very nice neighboor.
ok...my current setup..huh...it's a very very poor one for home recordist. i better don't mention them, coz maybe none to mention. damn...ok i'll tell you anyway, perhaps it'll be mean something for anyone, like..."don't follow this loooser"...

currently i just have a pc pentium III with a 384 MB memory. soundblaster type bla bla i don't really know but for sure it has only 1/4" jack inputs.
i record my guitar, bass, keyboard & vocals by playing them one by one through my amp. when i realize there is rec out in the back of my amp, i use it to connect the amp to the sound card. is that a right thing? or should i aim a mic in front of the amp in order to record?
i record drum in midi. my friends share their satisfaction by using a software, i forgot the name, is it fruityloops? perhaps i'm going to try it. but for sure, i don't record live drum.
for the output, i just connect the sound card to my pioneer power amp and using a hifi bose speaker to listen my record. the power amp and speaker used to play my stereo cds.
about the result, well like i've wrote before. i don't madafaka satisfied. what i want to produce is at least 80% of sound quality like records sale in music store.

so what do you think? should i start shopping? or from my descriptions you have tips for a good result with my current tools?
if you think i better get new things, please tell me your suggestion.

This is what I would do with $2400.

Build a new PC (Macs rule but that would kill the budget) Building a good PC is sometimes easier then buying one and usaually about half the cost.

Buy Digi001 (I am a pro tools guy)

Spend the rest on Mics

You seems to be doing pretty much the same thing as I am. (one instryment at a time and no live drums) :)

you can look through this forum and there are lots of info and suggestion.

One of my suggestion is to upgrade your vocal/instrument chain.

Mic -> preamp -> compressor -> soundcard

For mic,
Studio Projects C1 condensor mic (vocals) US$199
Shure SM57 (amp miking, vocals) US$70

preamp:
M-audio Audiobuddy US$80, DMP3 US$120
FMRAudio RNP US$475
Joemeek VC3Q US$199

Compressor:
FMRAudio RNC US$175

Soundcard:
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 US$139

Spend some money on some good studio monitor speakers as well.

Have fun shopping!
