I need a small diaphram condensor

Hello all.

I would like your sage advice on the purchase of a sdc. This one would be mainly for stringed instruments (guitar, violin, mandolin, etc.). I have $400 or so. New or used. I recently sold my km184s to buy a royer 121 (which is amazing) so I don't want a 184. If it matters I am totally analog (ms-16, Amek board).

Shure SM81s go for around $350 new. I have a pair, and they are quite useful for stringed instruments: I record banjo, mandolin, dulcimer, fiddle...an alternate is the Audio-Technica 4041, $280. I have one of those as well. Either choice has pretty flat response. I like the AT a little better.

I have also used them as drum overheads (the Shures as a spaced pair, the AT by itself when recording gigs with inputs limited to the 8 on my Korg D888).
 
Peluso CEMC6's cost less than the sm81's. I have 6 of the Peluso's and 6 of the sm81's. It is pretty rare that I prefer the sm81 over the Peluso's. Just my 2 cents.
 
Another vote for the Peluso CEMC6's. Perfect for your application. I started using a pair a few months ago and am very pleased with results.
 
the more recommendations you get, the less helpful they are, in a way, but here we go -- first - I'm a SM81 fan. I've got 3, and I use them a lot. I don't have the other mics named in the thread so far. I recently picked up an Oktava MK-012, and it sounds very good - you can read a lot about them on the board here (make sure you get real Russian ones and not Chinese fakes, try before you buy, if possible, can be difficult to get a stereo matched pair, etc.) -- if you have some time and energy, they're worth considering, too, and will likely be the least expensive.
 
I've been using SM81s for years in live recording applications and also use the Peluso CEMC6 amd Beyer MC930. I prefer the Beyer since it's warmer and exhibits more detail, esp on acoustic sources. You can't go wrong with any of these mics, imo.
 
OK. I bought a pair of Peluso cem6s. $400 on the bay. Thanks for your input. I'll post something recorded on them in a couple of weeks.
 
Just out of curiousity, why didn't you want/like the KM184s?

Just wondering... why just one? I think most would agree that SDCs are way more useful in pairs...

zzounds has a blemished, matched pair of Studio Projects C4s for $300, which is pretty good. You cam change the capsules from cardoid pattern to omni, which is pretty useful IMHO.

The km 184s were nice but i bought them as overheads and they weren't getting the whole kit the way that I wanted (too bright). Plus they sold as a pair for $1100. That means that I may have a warmer matched pair of sdcs (granted, I have yet to use them) plus $700 for more mics.
