i need a simple adaptor : OPTICAL to COAXIAL ...

hi there,

so i got a Motu 828 with a SPDIF input,
and i got a minidisc with an optical output

of course i'd like to connect these two digitally,

now i've seen some converters around, like this one:;

does this little adapter change the sound quality,
is it like the AD converters in soundcards?

or can i just find a cable that is optical on one side and coax on the other?( mhhhh....don't think so)

one additional question:

how long can an Optical cable be ?

is it OK to use a 10 meter long optical cable ?

or will you loose signal;..in some way ?
 
The M-Audio CO2 will also work.... the quality shouldn't change, since it's not changing the digital data (only the format of the data stream)........

I know there's a 50 foot limit on Lightpipe using the plastic fibre optic cable, so I imagine there's a limit for 75-ohm digital coax too..... use the shortest run possible.
 
Second vote on the CO2. Simple, well thought out.
 
ok, can't find the CO2 on ebay,
any suggestions of nice stores that sell it ?

i'm in europe...but can always let it shipped overseas...
 
radio shack makes a black box that converts optical to coax and vice versa. i think its around 15$. item # 15-1228. havent used mine in a while buy it works good.
 
HOSA also makes an optical to coax converter.
 
Just to follow up on my last post:

gemsbok, thanks for the tip on that Radio Shack optical/coax converter. I ordered one this afternoon, I just couldn't pass that up and have actually been needing one for a while.

I'll post into this thread when I get the converter and let you all know how it works.

probably nothing special...
i'm checkingout those sites...too bad they don't wanna load...tss...

but i wonder... will i be able to hear a difference in quality if i compare;:

- connecting a minidisc to the analog inputs of my MOTU 828
- connecting a minidisc to the Digital input of my Motu ?

or is it such a tiny winy dinky lill difference ?
