I have decided to upgrade my computer. It is an Athlon 1 ghz, 512 ram, 2 80gig 7200 HD, Audigy 2 Platinum

I am thinking of buying a barebones type system. I could keep my nvidia geforce 4, my 2 hard drives, my sound card ( i know its not the best) and cd-rw and dvd drives. I have been compairing various systems with athlon 2600-2800 or P4 2.6 range. I definately want 512 ram but should it be 333mhz or 400 mhz?

I just need some help getting some ideas. For the processor, cpu, ram, windows; i would like to stay under $500 or so. I also will keep my cool alienware antec case.

How about this?

Athlon 2800+ Barton
Asus a7n266-vm
512 DDR-266 2700
Windows XP Home

$405

Hows that AMD 64bit thing? I hear it kicks intels ass but nenver really got into detail.

i hear the same...never went into detail....as long as the chipset and processor work with my audiophile and sonar then I'm game for trying it

You can get your motherboard from MWave or NewEgg. The cost from MWave w/XP Pro (assuming best AthlonXP processor on best ASUS motherboard, with 512MB RAM, all components installed and tested) is $405 plus tax and shipping.

Can you not just put a faster processor in your present motherboard? If you did that you could then spend the rest on outboard gear (if you need it) or a better audio interface. Saying that, I've never heard the Soundblaster Audigy so I wouldn't want to pre-judge it just because it's not generally considered to be a "serious" audio interface. Maybe consider how many tracks, plugs, soft synths etc you'd like to use on an average session and work out whether you need to upgrade the whole shebang or whether the money would be better spent elsewhere.

The reason I want a new board is that mine only uses PC133 SDRAM, i figured if I am going to upgrade I might as well get something with ddr.

That's a contradiction in terms.

266MHz <-> 2100 MB/s
333Mhz <-> 2700 MB/s

You'll need 333/2700 for a Barton 2800+

What are you recording, and how many tracks do you need. I can't understand why you would want another comp, unless like me you only have one for home use and music. If you don't use it for anything else but music, then use your money on outboard gear and work with what you have, there seems to be plenty of power, just upgrade your soundcard.

I recording mostly my acoustic guitar. But I am planning on getting a keyboard so that I can get into the midi stuff. Since I have no keyboard, I have been using the piano roll in Sonar (kind of a pain!). I did one song with about 12 tracks (only about 5 or 6 having any audio at one time, seperate tracks for verse, chorus, etc.) and each with its own fx.

When I get this much stuff going on, I get crazy amounts of drop outs.
