what's up ya'll? I'm fairly new to self-recording (i'm building a studio in my room) and i need a mic. i have $400 to invest on a mic... i saw some older posts about mics but for all i know, a new model came out since then and made those mentioned prior more obsolete now... so any suggestions? any name brands ya'll prefer?

i appreciate it! thanks in advance

Mainly vocals, hip-hop/RnB/Pop mainly, and in a walk in closet..

you're the man. thank you! if i have to i'll buy it online, but i'll look around for stores in Miami that have it...

If I had to purchase a microphone for vocals - then it would be the Shure SM7b.
But if you could try to audition some at local stores to see which one may be best suited for your voice.

I recommend an Oktava Mic. I just got mine, and I'm super happy with the sound, and you can get them upgraded in the future if you wish. Mk-219 is what I have but the Mk-319 and 2500 are the higher up models, you can still get those for less then 400 on ebay.
The difference with these is that they aren't super bright like most of the mics out there, so its more of a vintage sound.

So it's gonna be pretty much pop...you need a fast mic, not airy, good mids, not so warm/slow/sensual; I would get a used AT4050, better all around than a Blue Baby Bottle and better mids than the Blue Dragonfly. AT4047 is great too, but IMHO more for rock than RnB.

if you are going to consider the SM7b then I will advise you to evaluate what you are using with it. You need alot of juice so a better preamp would be good to have. It is also a very flat mic. The Hip hop recording ive done has been ok, but I seem to prefer the AT4040 because of the low end warmth I get from it. Obviously my recording conditions may be different but if your looking for typical hip hop vocals I would go with a Large condensor. Ive heard good things about some of the sterling audio mics to.

...it really sounds "expensive"...puts alot of my more expensive mics to shame...but check out the new thread I just put up...according to Michael Joly, the new revised MXL 2003A sounds very close to the modded V67G:

Oh yeah. I had read that earlier and I think that I'm more than interested in purchasing one.

Good to know that the manufacturers are watching to see how their products are being modified and step up to the plate with more to offer their costumers than just a starting platform for people like Michael Joly to make something special out of a so-so microphone.
