no you cant use balanced (trs or xlr) in any jack. in order to get the full functionality of a balanced signal your output device has to be balanced, you have to have a balanced cable and the input of the device your connecting to has to be balanced.
always remember:
balanced gear > balanced cable > balanced gear = balanced signal
balanced gear > unbalanced cable > balanced gear = unbalanced signal
unbalanced gear > balanced cable > balanced gear = unbalanced signal
balanced gear > balanced cable > unbalanced gear = unbalanced signal
balanced audio is achieved by sending two signals of the same audio along with a ground down one cable with one of the audio signals flipped out of phase. the two audio signals (both in and out of phase) pickup the same interference just as an unbalanced cable would but when the two audio signals reach a balanced piece of gear, the gear then flips the audio signal thats out of phase back into phase, compares the two audio signals and cancels out any interference that might have been picked up. this gives you a much cleaner more direct signal. which is why (just like dementedchord mentioned) you could use 300 ft. of xlr cable without picking up much interference rather than if you used 300 ft. of instrument cable which by the time it reached its destination would probably be nothing but interference.
i personally use balanced gear wherever possible. balanced gear is a few dollars more but for me the few dollars are definitely worth the clean signal.
