Iam new I need some help with TRS cables I dont understand them and like when do you use them ?what do you gang by using them anything will help Thanks

They are used for balanced signals and stereo wiring, like on your headphones....similar to XLR cables for balanced signals.

For instruments...guitars, keyboards...1/4" TS cables are usually the norm.

What are you looking to do...?

trs has 3 connecting points for 2 wires and a sheild(ground)... the thing is all about a balanced or differential signal...

imagine your guitar cable running through a noisey(electronicly) room... the single wire picks up the noise and it gets amplified along with the signal... now imagine that we can send that signal down 2 conductors... and the signal is out of phase or invertyed relative to each other... ie. as one goes up the other goes down... make sense??? since the noise it's going to pick up is identicle in the 2 channels if we "re-invert one of the signals the noise will cancell and the signal ads to gether so noise is gone!!! may take thinking through it a couple of times to get your head around it but it can make serious difference... this is whyyou can run mics for 300ft and no appreciable noise... got it???

Trs cables

Thanks for everything so far you guys are smart . Here is what I have a two Presonus firepods interfaces then I have a Presonus Eureka then I have a presonus ACP 88 compressor and a DBX ieq-31 and a antares avp. Iam confused how to hook everything up. is their a right way or a wrong way? and I didnt know what to get for cables TRS or what? is trs work with every jack?

Whats up man!!!

You should head on over to this site http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm

and read it in its entirety.

CHEERS!!!!

no you cant use balanced (trs or xlr) in any jack. in order to get the full functionality of a balanced signal your output device has to be balanced, you have to have a balanced cable and the input of the device your connecting to has to be balanced.

always remember:
balanced gear > balanced cable > balanced gear = balanced signal
balanced gear > unbalanced cable > balanced gear = unbalanced signal
unbalanced gear > balanced cable > balanced gear = unbalanced signal
balanced gear > balanced cable > unbalanced gear = unbalanced signal

balanced audio is achieved by sending two signals of the same audio along with a ground down one cable with one of the audio signals flipped out of phase. the two audio signals (both in and out of phase) pickup the same interference just as an unbalanced cable would but when the two audio signals reach a balanced piece of gear, the gear then flips the audio signal thats out of phase back into phase, compares the two audio signals and cancels out any interference that might have been picked up. this gives you a much cleaner more direct signal. which is why (just like dementedchord mentioned) you could use 300 ft. of xlr cable without picking up much interference rather than if you used 300 ft. of instrument cable which by the time it reached its destination would probably be nothing but interference.

i personally use balanced gear wherever possible. balanced gear is a few dollars more but for me the few dollars are definitely worth the clean signal.

1/4" cable? That's pretty short. You must stand very close to your amp.
