i might have been a dumb ass... help!!!!!!!!

I have this mixer right here

and for a long time i've been hooking it through my sound card using the tape out and i was getting very very horrible result with a condenser mic (MXL990)... so i result back in my karaoke mixer which forced me to go back to my shure sm57 (cuzz that cheap kaorake mixer got no phantom power, it wouldn't work with the condenser mic)

i came across this

and realized that it might be possible that i've been hooking it up with da wrong shit... the article is telling me to pump my output from the mixer to the sound card using the fx send

Now the big question is? is the fx send and the tape out would produce the same result? and which cable will i need to use if i want to hook it up through the fx send? i have not seen a cable that will fit... i might have to drop by radio shack and take a look later. I feel like an idiot....
 
generally.....no, I disagree with him.

first off, the aux sends are going to be all prefader and pre-pan. So no channel volume or pan movements are going to be recorded...making this an obvious mono send. So anything you try and record in stereo isn't going to work. This may or may not apply to what you do.
Not to mention the input to your soundcard is probably stereo, yes? (you didn't mention your soundcard).

An even more efficient way of doing it would be to send the stereo Main Outs to your soundcard....then return to the Tape Ins, and pressing the "Tape to Control Room" button. This way you can patch the Control Room outs to your monitors and control the volume with the Phones/Control room knob. Just make sure tape to mix is not selected, otherwise you will feed back.

I'm more interested as to why the Tape outs are giving you a bad sound recently. Ideally, Tape Outs-->Soundcard In-->Soundcard Out-->Tape In-->Control Room outs

hm.. so i was doing it right....
it's not really horrible, just that the vocal recorded are very thin and hollow. and i don't know why because with the dynamic mic and a cheaper mixer. the voice that came in was fuller and thicker (still not as clean as the original voice, but it's probably closer to the original voice than with that condenser mic)...

i'm just using a cheap sound card for testing purpose. trying to gather up money for a better one. just recording some basic vocal, so mono would probably be fine IMO... no idea why it sound super thin and hollow with that condenser mic. i was thinking that i had the setting wrong or something... but i guess not.
 
It's because of the mic, the 990 does give that type of sound n e ways. Try a different condenser, or on your mixer, take off some of the high's with your mixer because the 990's sound is a little to high anyways.
 
Just use your 57 for a vocal mic. There's nothing wrong with that and it's probably of a higher quality than that 990.
 
now that we got that sorted out.... i've got a few more question...

musician friends is haivng 10pct off free shipping. so i'm just gonna go ahead and place an order for the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 as i'm in need of 1. but that's only gonna come out to be 90 bucks (won't quality for free shipping) so i thought i pick up some accesories to past the 99 dollar limit and i've decided i want a good cable to connect the mixer to the new sound card.

and also, i will probably get a new condenser mic later, and i was wondering what mic have the oposite effect of that XML990? cuzz my voice is sort of the thiner voice, and that MXL990 is really pushing that..... so i'm gonna puch for another mic... the 57 i have is really old. and i think it's about time for a new mic

PS: i just check, it's not the sm57, it's the PG58 which is like so much worst (i've been reading the forum and sm57 got stuck in my head lol)...

If you are going to use the Main outs you'll want to get two, 1/4" TS to RCA cables.

If you can afford it, I'd step up the mixer or soundcard and save for a mic later...but that's just my opinion.

i'll do the soundcard 1st, the mixer then the mic :)... or maybe soundcard mic then mixer. cuzz i heard the one i got isn't that bad and alot of people use that mixer.

and also i've just taken a look at the 2496 sound card.... seems like if i want to use my computer speakers i'll have to hook it up through the control room out? does that mean every time i wanna use the computer sound for normal music listening i have to turn the mixer on?

well, Behringer is sort of considered the bottom of the barrel when it comes to recording gear. They've got decent equipment to start out on, but if you can upgrade...do it.

yes, unless you have another pair of speakers and just leave your old soundcard plugged in to your computer too....then just use the old soundcard for casual listening.
 
you know any cheap decent mic with the opposite effect of that XML990? i heard alot of people like it and said it was good bang for the buck, but it doesn't fit my voice... maybe it's better for some super thick/low voice making it pop out more. but it's not for me... need something decent ~100 would be fine.
