Well what the hell is it and where's my sound clip? :p

Music Man. I have an old (1972 I think) MM combo. Killer tone. Super heavy.

I think it was about 1981, when I was 14 that I was buying my first gig-worthy amp. I had the choice between a music man combo and a 212 peavey classic. I bought the peavey. It occurred to me what a different guitar player I would have been had I had access to such gritty saturated distortion at that age. I remember it being able to sizzle with the pregain set on 10. The peavey never did that. But it had TWO twelves and the MM had only one. I just never was interested in playing "hard rock" like most of the other 14 year olds because my gear couldn't really cop that sound. I'm probably the only out of that group of 14 year olds that still plays. Hell I'm probably the only one who ever gigged.

I wouldn't change things if I could do it again. I'd like to have it now, though. That peavey is in the garage and it didn't work the last time I turned it on. Poor thing.

'Tis a Music Man HD130. I added the clear front panel so I can check the tubes without going around the back of it. Ugly, but functional! I love it. Definitely heavy as hell, but it's not super saturated by any means. Master is always dimed and volume is really volume. It gets a little bit of breakup when it gets past 3, but it NEVER gets that loud in practice. Warm cleans if you play soft, blues tones with more dynamic picking. Sweet and subtle compression when you really start pushing it. Favorite amp ever. EVER!
Also Peavey VTX MX heads are extremely similar in tone (except a bit less versatility).

Mine's a very cherry '64 Fender Deluxe Reverb; it's very likely the last amp I will ever need. I heart my BFDR.

I know why you like it so much but could you explain it to the rest of the class? :D

Gladly. I've got a JBL K-120 in it; when it's clean, it's very very clean. When I play my Strat through it in the #2 position the glassy sweetness of the sound will bring a tear to your eye. It also breaks up gradually from about 4 on up, and when I crank it up with my Les Paul, it's a very bad girl indeed. It is incredibly responsive to every nuance of the pick, breaks up naturally without tearing my head off, but has enough headroom for plenty of expression even at the cleanest settings.

More than anything, it's a perfect fit for me - the way(s) I play and the ensemble that I am part of.

And no, it is not for sale. Does that about cover it? ;^)

I bet it is a kick ass amp. I couldn't afford to buy it any way. :p

So if that amp bit the dust.......I mean got completely destroyed in a freak accident. How tough do you think it would be finding a replacement?

For example, when Sonic Youth's gear trailor (with all their gear that they had collected over the years) got stolen, they didn't know if they would be able to go on doing what they do.

If you want to hear this beast, check out http://www.myspace.com/1000talons. I use it on Oceans and Slowdawner. I'm on the right channel. This is with my old settings, which were a little bit muddy. Plus I didn't do the best job of miking the cabs as these are just demos, but you get the idea of how thick this amp is. Still, it sounds so amazing live.

timthetortoise, i dig your stuff and that amp sounds pretty mean.

So when you say amp, which one do you mean? Somehow through Hamfests, ebay and trading I've ended up with a bit of a rediculous collection.
