oops... CD's at Sams... $35/100

Hopefully these fine folks here can possibly help you retrieve some stuff. It would be a bummer to only have MP3's to retrieve. I gotta hope you got masters of your songs, at least.

And above all...glad your back...:)

Here's the best bit advise you'll get from anyone ever....

"Learn by other peoples mistakes"

Sorry Sam, but if something good can come out of this, its just this message.

thanks for the thoughts guys! :D What a bunch of cool cats!

This is the whole reason why I don't use my computer for recording.. I have a lot of mixes on Cd's, but I started getting lazy and not backing up songs religously.. I mostly lost the rare stuff, and the instrumental versions etc. I have reclaimed all the basic mixes of my tunes, but lost a lot of alternate take type stuff..

This computer is set up really dumb. There is no boot disk because the operating system is burned into a section of the hard drive that can't be touched.. I added a second hard drive and thought I could just move all the stuff over to there and reformat the other.. I have definitely learned from this one..

I never got along with computers for this reason.. I had about 3000 songs total that were lost.. You name it, it was in there.. I already started reloading...

I feel better today because I think I understand how to not have that happen again.. Back up everything as you go..

I have a total of 110 GB's of space to fill now, and things are setup better thanks to 100 calls to 'hp' tech support, and a good friend with patience.. Hopefully this will never happen again. (but if history has taught me anything, it probably will).. I will always have cd backups from now on.

Thanks for everyones words, they made me laugh! :D

I know that another member did this before, but all my posts will now have a thumbs down on them until I feel differently..

Thanks again buds!

All you guys kick ass!

sorry for my dumbness, but I don't understand what happened to you, Sam.

You tried to format your drive A and you formatted your drive B?
I don't understand that, it never happened to me. I have a mac, so maybe it's a different scheme than the pc. If so, please somebody explain it to me since I am also a pc user (though never formatted 2 drives on those). Is it that the pc can't format single drivres?

Thanks very much. And I recomend you to try one of the Symantec programs for unerasing data, sometimes they work.

Cheers, Andrés

PS: did you finally record the song with the Candy-O synth?

we feel for you man.

with cdr's being so inexpensive (i got paid 10$ by staples to take a 100-pack off their hands) i burn everything for storage.

"whatever kills us will only make us stronger"

i have no idea who said that!

:)

dats wack!!!

Leave it to Sami to post a thread with no music that receives more hits and replies than all of Jamal Buchet's songs...COMBINED.

It's all about the talent man.

I can't agree enough about the backup info.

I had a hard drive crash a couple months ago and luckily I instaale d CD burner last year. I had about 3 years of digital pix on file but I didn't lose a thing because I had my "back up disc!"

In fact when I was searching for some of my fav sites I found this forum.

There are people who can retrieve anything if you want to spend enough $$$

Hope all works well

hey Andres, this computer is set up strange.. It came with a 40 GB hard drive, but only 33 GB are available because it partitions off 7 gb to store windows XP, it can never be completely uninstalled because that part of the hard drive is untouchable.. I added a second 80 GB harddrive for music. I thought that if I reformatted, it would just reformat the C drive without effecting the other side.. (They call a format a 'system restore' because it restores windows to the way it was when it left the factory.. (hp) It tried to write some of the information on the second drive and erased most of what was on it, and the format went bad.. I later found out that you actually have to go inside and unhook the second drive, just to do a format.. When I did that, I found that windows wouldnt write over the information it put on the second drive, so I was screwed.. (and getting all sorts of errors) We finally figured out that I had to use the reformatting software that came with the hard drive again, just so I could start off clean again..

I know nothing about computers, so this whole saga was streched out over a few days.. I have enough of the tunes reclaimed from CD's, but there is much that is unreplacable.. I won't be relying on the computer as a reliable means of storage until I have backed everything up to Cd's..

Thanks again for the thoughts guys!

BTW - Andres, I didn't do that Candy-O cover yet, but I hope to soon. I had some ideas about maybe replacing some of the keys with guitars.. thanks again for those links man!

I guess you have already heard it, but that totally sucks! Computers suck!

Okay, I've said my peace.

Glad to have you back!

What a nightmare!

I always keep CDR copies of my stuff in addition to a copy of my boot drive on my second drive. I do my system maintenence at least once a week (file check, de-frag & directory rebuild) to keep things from getting out of control.

Good to have you back, dude!:)

Ok, so you tried to did a restore, not a reformat. Maybe what went wrong is that a restore, well, restores the system to it's original state. As the second drives was not part of the original state, it messed up. But it's certainly strange. The restore software should be aware of these things.

Well, if you reformatted the second drive (on purpose or not), there's much less chance to recover something. But in any case, why don't you try a good data recovering software? I did in the past and could recover some things.

Oh, and I got to thank you because your thread on Candy-O made me listen to those records again, which is very enjoyable.
If you're still interested in having some cool synth lines we could collaborate. You could send me the midi files and I'll send you some synths sound that you can use. Tell me if you're interested.

Cheers, Andrés

boy.. thats crazy man
I have done that before with Mp3's
I converted my friends cd collection to Mp3's ~450 cd's and then that secondary drive showed up as C: when I rebooted... I was thinking that the primary drive would be C:... but no. Then format c:..... Ouch that one hurt..... now I double and triple check when I do the big format... you live and ya learn... your case is a bit more severe
oh well... no biggy .. im sure you have more goodies under your sleeve :)
