Hey I'm brand new at this home recording ting and looking for any advice.
I presently have a new Dell with a pentium 4, and was hoping to use it to record my vocal and guitar, and then mix it down with pro tools free. I just picked up a behringer 6 channel mixer and mic and was ready and then was bummed to find out I had no way to connect to my sound card. My pc I guess has a factory installed one in the mother board. 1st question: other than a sound card and misc. cables, do I have all i need to record.
2nd question: what soundcard would be the best one for around $200. I want to thank you up front for any help.

There should be SOME kind of input even on a built in sound card.Usually,the line in is a 1/8" mini plug jack like you see on walkman headphones. It might just be a matter of going to Radio Shack to get the adapters and cables you need to hook it up.
You will eventually want to get a high quality soundcard,but if you can get the adapters etc.,that would get you started anyway.

you can disable onboard sound and get an M-Audio Audiophile for under $200......i haven't used this particular card, but i haven't heard anyone complaining about it....if you aren't sure exactly what you are going to end up doing with your pc, the Audiophile would be versatile and has great driver support.

All of the current Dells that I have seen DO have a line in port on the back, 1/8" miniplug.
