just how long does it take before you start holding the right string down and not touching all the others?

Just curious as I know with practic and more practice it will eventually happen but curious anyway.

Thanks

...not too long...

often, whatever 'beginner problems' you have playing, will solve themselves thorugh practice once you've realized what those problems are. i'd say, take a look at your fretboard hand when you hear there's a problem, make sure you find exactly which finger/s and what string/s you want to behave differently, imagine what you would have to do to make it sound the way you want it to and then practice, practice, practice, practice, till you get there. for me, to visualize things in my mind before i try to exectue them, speeds up the learning process. as you said though, it's different for everyone.

good luck!

Check that it is POSSIBLE to hold a string with your fingers without touching the others in the first place. i know of people with big fingers who cannot do that with certain thin necked guitars. but most of the time its not a problem. (Some people with thin fingers couldn't stand the fat neck of American Strats.)

If its possible, its only a matter of time before you can do that. Practice, practice, practice. That's the three most important keys !

Also do check the setup of your guitars as well. Sometimes if your action is too high ie the strings are too far from the fretboard, you'll naturally get into such problems as well.

Cheers

you can also use the fleshy part of your right hand(assuming you play righty)below the pinky to dampen the strings you are not playing. You can also use your left hand for the same. I use an ES-335 when playing and if you dont use these techniques with that guitar when you are playing loud the guitar will just start resonating. It comes as you practice.
