For what it's worth, since the age amd serious propogation of electronic instruments to the masses, somewhere around the early 80's, I think the whole paradigm of what a "producer" is has changed dramatically. At that point, the whole producer-as-artist thing became a much more tactile art.

{pardon my upcoming generalizations}
Before this time, a producer's role could arguably be considered that of a conductor, synthesizing ideas, pieces, parts, and people into a cohesive body of work. I imagine for the more instrument-driven people of today (such as band members) things haven't changed so much since bands often want, need, or are forced to use producers who are known for a certain feel or sound.
Electronic multi-instrumentalists (rap, dance, electronica producers) are often "in-charge" of the whole soundscape and every other aspect of the music, including its' overall dynamics.

That being said, today's producer is a more concrete artist - picks and chooses the sounds/snippets, determines where, how, and why they're laid down, etc, etc. Producers, at least when they fuck with electronic music are the artists, just as necessary artistic in their capacity as MCs are in theirs.

Unfortunately, there are too many not-so-special MCs rhyming over phat betas, and vice versa.

AND ABOUT HOUSE MUSIC & WIMMINS...

I've boned many a fine filly many a time to the likes of mr. fingers and others. In fact, at 12 or 13 years old ('82 or so), I got puh-lenty of phat "roller skate dances" and booty squeezes to everybody's favorite in the hood (at the time), Kraftwerk (not house, but not the "quiet storm" either). Popped my cherry between flipping over the same damn art-of-noise record for the whole evening. And oh those late nights listening to cybotron... House and techno weren't always generally associated with white kids, hookers, freaks, or drugs. Damn I miss being a kid.

For what it's worth...

Wuzzup Flo Dolo...Long Time no see

Well.As of now.House music has a culture all of its on.Theirs many different levels and elements of house.Chicago is the birthplace for this movement.I'm even very much in tune with the Detroit version of house.....Mr.Fingers,K-Hand,and all them Detroit cats...K-hand was sorta like a thief back in the day though.She remixed Cajmere joints
at least 4-7 different time..Her (Yeah,she's a she)version of the percolator got very much play in the city of Lansing...But house music in general gave birth to Bass music,jungle,Techno,House,Ghetto,Club etc....that cat Project Pat damn near killed me when he made the cut "chicken heads" and gave himself credit for the concept.Chickn heads is a Ghetto House track from Chicago's own DJ'Deeon...But anyways..Bigger companies had no respect for the guys thaty created the movement.One in particular that sits off in my mind is 'Fantasy Girl' by Chicagos own "Dj Pierre".That track is widely played to this day and he ownly made $500 dollars off that album.As so of a lotta of creators that birthed the sound.They relocated overseas to spots like london where they get more lucrative pay for their tracks.London is a spot where House is palyed often also.A lot of overseas spots respect the House Sound......Haaaaa,You mentioned Kraftwerk........I got 'Tour de France' album sitting off in the crate right now.But to be part of the birth movement when it was formed is a memorable experience I'll take to the grave with me.The parties at LEO and the slowdance then the latenight fuck will stick with me forever...........................................Holla atcha man.....

Just for the record

Two of my favorite House Cats are from overseas is 'Joey Beltran' and 'A guy called Gerald'...A lot of ppl didn't know they were from overseas since they get hella play in the stated ;)

Oops...

Hmmm...

dj fingaz,
Back in the day Kelli Hand was probably the same age as me and therefore too young to be dropping shit. No thief though, just a chick doing hot remixes. I could give you a good argument regarding house music NOT being the mother of techno, jungle or bass music. Everybody knew A Guy was from the U.K. before his shit was domestically available early in the last decade. "London is a spot where house is played often." Not trying to sound fucked up, but why you runnin' down your history/geography of house? And what do you mean "as of now?" Wait, don't answer that. I really don't folllow you. I guess you didn't know what the hell I was on about in my original post - the secluded and reckless (that would be me) leading the blind (or at least cross-eyed). Na ja... My post was kind of for the cats following the "who's more important" joint from a few days ago. Sorry, to confuse you, dude.

Spin... Ah, Spin...
