I was at a local home studio. You can see it at http://www.smashtbenz.com . Now I did record there but I didn't really check out everything. But he runs Cubasis on his computer. He has a AKG mic. A mackie 1202 VLZ pro mixer. I have all that too. I have a SOund Blaster Plat 5.1. So what should I be hooking up to the computer and how to achieve similar results.

what do you already know how to do? Do you have MIDI gear? a synth? Rebirth? a better program than Cubasis? Dont limit yourself... you can easily get BETTER results than that guy.

HEY!!! I'm not so sure about that "just stack the t.v. on the monitor" idea. :) Truly though, what do you already know about the recording process? What else do you own? Umm...yeah what camn said...

re:

Well I know the process of mixing on Cool Edit Pro and little on Cubasis. But he was telling me it's the same. So I can handle the software stuff. He has stuff like keyboards and effects boxes. But I am just interested in rapping over a beat (a wav file). That's basically what we did. But we got a nice clean and practically professional result at his place. So I was thinking since I got lots of things similar it wouldn't be too much to get the same results. All I really need is some headphones. Currently I just plug my mic in the mackie and transfer it to the Live Drive Mic In 2 also known as "Line In 2". I don't own much software. I got Sound Forge, Cool Edit, Cake Walk 9, Cubasis. I'm just saying since I seen what Cubasis can do, I sorta want to get in to it. I don't own any midi gear or a synth. I'm not worried about making beats just want to record clean vocals (which I can get already). And mix it well. He was adjusting the vocal volume level through the mixer. Where for me currently I record it in (using low pre amps) then amp it. But then I don't get a consistent result. If you need more info I'll reply again.

basically

Basically I want to know how can I control the vocals volume with my Mackie mixer. I want to do the main mixing in Cubasis. But what should I be connecting the the computer and stuff. I have a Shure Sm58 mic but I'm getting a AKG mic later on maybe a better one. But just need to know. I know it's a vague questions.

Are you talking about controlling the vocal volume before or after mixing? If you want to do it while recording use a compressor. If you want to do it afterwards, do it within Cakewalk.

Well he was playing the beat (we listened through the headphones). Then he asked me to check the mic doing "testing, testing". While the beat was playing. He adjusted it so my vocal sounded at the right volume level against the beat. That's how it came out in the end at that volume level. I don't understand how he did it like that...

its easy.

plug your mic into channel 1.
run a line from aux send A into your computers line in.
run your card's out to ch2.
make sure Aux A is set to "pre"fader.

set your trim.
raise your aux A level on ch1 until you are hotbutnotdistorted in your program.
make sure ch2 aux send is zeroed.
Monitor thru the headphone jack... assigned to "main mix"
Use your Channel1 volume to control Vocals in the headphones...this will not affect your recorded signal, if you set it up this way.
Use ch2 volume to control beat playback. Make sure the AUX is zeroed.

you want as hot a vocal signal as you can get without distortion. You dont need to make it the right volume in the mix right now.. you can do that later. But you can Monitor it at the right volume. They are independent.

Thanks I sorta understand it..... lol. I'll try to figure it out. I'm thinking back to the studio and I believe he did have a compressor as well. Is that neccesary? Thanks again!
