Still Learning.......
I have just finished at my school/college I have been attending for the past 5 years, and popping down to the Recording studio just to say goodbye to my old music teacher we started talking about some of our old recordings. He suggested I take the old Fostex Reel-to-Reel home and record some of it on to my DAW.

Now he is talking about selling it. Its a 20 year old Fostex G16S that to my knowledge has never be reconditioned, but it does come with a loom to hook it up and a bunch of old reels. Has anyone got any idea how much it is worth?

 Neil I don't think the G-series is 20 yrs old. I have a fostex E-16 openreel, they quit selling those in '92, started selling the G-series in '92 or '93.
The value is dependent on the condition of heads, transport, etc.
Rough condition may start out at $250.00 US and on up, I'm assuming it's the narrow guage format of 16trks on 1/2" tape.

Get the thing, you will love it!!!

I think my old music teacher is looking at around the £100-£80 mark, so I'm pretty keen.

I did all my first recordings on this machine, from when I was 12 'til about 16........ Aaaaah. Memories.

:D Start making new memories as soon as possible guy!!!

If you don't want it, I'll take it!

What you got is piece of crap!!! That thing will not work!!

You'll need to heads, rollers, capstans, idler wheels etc.
Plus a dangerous noxious liquid will be emiited from the power supply after 40 hours of use!!

I'll be glad to take it off your hands while putting a lil money in your pockets to save your from this dreaded machine. Say, $100 should do it!!

P.M. me if you wanna consider my time and stress saving solution to your problem!!

Congrats on getting the G-16S, buy it if you can get it for around $600 US to $1200 US according to the typical Ebay While its not the greatest sounding machine, it does have the ability to add a flavor many people like (ME). Its sync capable to a PC so you can track to the G-16s and transfer tracks to DAW with some of the character of the tape. Im probably going to get another E-16 or G-16 in about 18 months. I have too much on tape to abandon it quite yet.

Ill give you $120 US plus shipping and handling:)

$135 plus I'll throw in a free ALESIS 3630!!

:)

Looks like I got a bargain........

Despite the dangerousness of this machine (and your very kind offers), I think I'll keep a hold of this one ;)

hey is this HR-bay ?????:)

Good luck Neil with your new toy.

I got a TEAC 2342( I think thats the model) 4 track 1/2" thats sitting around. Is it any good?

Congratulations!

I look forward to seeing you in the analog only forum.
Welcome to a whole new world of recording.

Tell ya what I'm gonna do.
$150.00, plus a color TV.

That's my final offer.

since we are selling crappy reel to reel machines, i found a four channel that i think is a sony, if anyone is interested, i will post what model and general info on the thing, from looking at it it is at least 20 year old.

Sorry going off topic :D

but, Neil, just curious, have you start recording with it ? How does it sound ? My eyes are on a Fostex E16 as well !

 Both the E's,G's are good narrow guage format workhorses.

Neil keep the thing no matter what, Gilwe; if the E's heads look good, go for it, if the LED's have a problem lighting up correctly around the 0 db mark, PM me if you want an explainaction of whats going on.

P/s if a 4050 is available with/for it DON'T pass that up at any cost.

:( The problem is in the mfg of the Individual LED strips. Each one has an individual chip on the circuit board and the chip develops a short. Their techs told me that this only interfers with the display and NOT in any way with the signal. These are easily replaced by removing part of the front of the machine, on the E-series the lower half is seperate from the upper half, take the clear cover/scale off, then unplug the strips.
It's fairly easy thing to do. If you like, I can get you a part number and I ordered mine from Fostex.
I calibrate my machine/mixer so I use the mixer meters and ignore the E's meters.

Let me know if you want the part number.

I did a lot of recording with it a few years ago, but haven't had a chance to since I got it recently. As I remember it sounded fine, the old analogue hiss problem was non-existent. I need to have a go now, but I only have a 12 track mixer! Annoying. I'll never be able to afford to replace it with a 16 either. Oh well. Guess I'll have to wait till after Uni........ 4 years. Bugger.
