I helped out a little mixing a Van Halen tribute band...

Really Got Me Now, is pretty cool. I'd liike some more guitar, more power, but that is just a personal preferance. What was captured, seems pretty true to the original VH recordings. More modern, but not a super heavy, low, guitar. Nice tone.

you really got me I love and this recording is no exception. if anytrhing I'd have bussed the kit and EQ'd it with a bit more top end. The whole mix sounds slightly dark but it works fantasticaly.

I was a tour manager for a tribute band once and as much as I liked the music (stone roses) I kinda hated what I was doing. These guys are like my guys...obviously tuned into their job and doing it very well.

Good stuff Ford V, the guitar tone on you really got me is spot on, although maybe a bit hidden with the reverb.

Top class! for all we think of each other I'm taking my hat off and tipping it to you. I got out the originals and this is close by a hair... a baw hair as we say here

Something I usually don't do here, but there is a first time dah. dah. dah....I usually don't read what the post is about but I caught "Van Halen" and then unfortunately cheated by looking at some of the comments you made about a tribute band and cheating again by glimpsing on a couple of negatives....trust me at this point, I glimpsed, but am very excited because I love Van Halen, e specially the early stuff with Diamond Dave. Never talked/typed this much before listening to posts but even with my love for VH, I did glimpse a couple negs even though I didn't mean to. I assure you I am fairly unbiased on my reviews, as is my reputation and is derived for people giving me the same courtesy, because aside from patting each other on the back and telling each other how huge our penis's are, honesty is really the only way we are going to learn to be better. That said, I am going now to your link....

Sounds good, and very eighties :)
Good mix, great recording, the guitar sounds a bit strange and thin to be this kinda music, wich really makes me love it, I love thin guitar sounds.
Great work man.

whoa, shit man....hold the presses...you got a hell of an Edward incarnation you are recording there holmes. Alright, it is hard to be objective when I love early VH so much, and completely focus on the engineering aspect instead of comlimenting the oh so sweet tone an playing of the guitarist doing these tracks...others as well, but damn that guitar tone, not to mention the playing, but the tone is really what shines as Edward. You don't have to do this because I am going to give you my honest opinion anyway, but just for shits and giggles, tell me what the guitarist is going through to get that tone?

Anyway, mixwise and even bandwise this is what I will offer....mix sounds great on everything except for the vocals, if you are shooting for a tribute with Diamond DAve. Vocalist is good, but not Dave sounding, while the rest of the players are. There is a simple way to get a better Dave sound from a vocalist who in all reality is probably better technically than the real thing, though must imitate the real thing that is so distinctive in tone....the singer's mic is very syphillys, I'm sorry, sibilant. The singer has a very non-Dave voice, at least as recorded. There are ways to work around that, not only in studio but live as well as you know. DAve has a very prominent midrange in his tone. Lead vox...emphasize the low-mids and a little of the high-mids, pull back the high EQ and add a little low.
The vocalist is the only piece, as a tribute, that was marginal. Great vocalist, and to tell the truth I would like to hire him on a couple of my originals, but just not Dave. Again, with creativity on your part as the engineer, minus the character of Dave which in itself is a task to find, you could do something more I feel with the lead vocal tracks and EQ.
Did you do all of the guitar Echoplex simulations in engineering or was that brought from the guitar player. Impressive, however it was done. I hope it wasn't a digital modeler, but have the unfortunate feeling it was. Nonetheless, impressive simulation, and I am a BIG early VH fan. :) :) :)

Oh yeah, I would push the bass guitar a little more. Great job on playing but distant in the mix.

Edit...sorry, I listen first, read second...the DLR is a chic. Sounds like a high-toned dude, but if you push the lower and upper mids I think you could benefit their demo. Awesome, and PLEASE tell me the guitar tone secret, even if it is PM. I gave you my time, so please give me the courtesy back :)
