Scenario - I have a delta 1010 and a Soundcraft M12, recording to Cool Edit Pro 2.

Say, I start out recording drums and bass guitar, going to the preamps of my m12, out the direct outs to the delta 1010. Now I want to put in guitars. How would I set it up so I could listen to the previously recorded tracks while recording new tracks? Should I monitor out the direct outs of the 1010, or should I route back to the board and monitor that way? What would be the ideal setup?

A couple of choices

Chris,
There are a couple of good ways to do what you want, but a few questions answered would help.

1)How are you presently listening to what you have recorded?
2)Are you going to be using any stand alone mic pres or are you for now just going to go from your mixer only?

Did you realize you have a built in monitor mixer with your Delta card? It works pretty good as well.

Get back and we'll get you hooked up!

I actually just have it going out of my Omni Studio breakout box (selling this, so it won't be around forever), but that's just at my house right now. I'm mainly wondering about tracking.

Right now only the mixer. If I get any stand alone pres they'll go direct in to the delta 1010.

Indeed I did, but I was just curious as to how all of this stuff will mesh together for recording and playback and monitoring playback and all that jazz.

Thanks for the reply.

I just realized I have a ton more questions to ask! Haha.

Here goes.

I was thinking about monitoring while on the toilet (like all geniouses). Say I track the drums and bass first. That's easy, just do headphone mixes from the aux outs. So after I have those tracks saved, I rearrange my setup, right? I take the tracks I already have recorded, put them from the direct outs of the delta 1010 to the line ins on the board so I can monitor those through the aux outs for headphone mixes along with the new tracks I'm recording while listening to them, right?

Just make sure the speakers make an equilateral triangle!

Chris,
You have basically the same set up as I do, so here is how I do it.

I run the output 1 and 2 from my Delta 1010 into the last 2 channels of my mixer (ch 15 /16). that way when I hit playback I can route the stereo playback from the computer to my headphones which are fed by my aux 1 send. If I want to hear over speakers I just raise the main volume fader .(I have my speakers hooked up to the main outs).

With this set up you can track live stuff through the headphones as well as the play back simply by adjusting the aux send feeding the headphone amp.

Once you go to dedicated pres it gets a little more complicated but not much. You just have to use the Deltas monitor mix functions on the applet page to send / adjust the volume of all pres attached to the delta that are not attached to the mixer as well.
