King of Bling
Okay, just installed a new soundcard on my daughter's computer, and I have an issue that I'm positive somebody knows how to fix.

Everything is set up to record through the line in. Line in is selected as my recording device in windows, and the soundcard is selected as the recording and playback device in CEP. When I play a guitar through the line in, I can hear it through the system, and it's also making the meters bounce in CEP.

But AS SOON as I hit "record," the meters go to nothing (not even the soundcard's floor noise registers) and it's not recording.

Help me...hold me,
Chris

And I've got the most current drivers for the soundcard, and I've now reinstalled CEP right from the disk 2X.

Anybody?

I'm sure you've tried this, but if you are monitoring the levels before you start recording (a good idea!), then you hit the record button, it stops monitoring and nothing happens, right? Hit record again and away you go (hopefully).

s.o.

No, but I know what you're saying. I actually hit the record button until it starts scrolling...it's making a wave (maroon block) and scrolling across as if it's recording, there's just nothing in it...not even hiss...totally silent; like it's recording from a soundcard that's not even there.

Since I posted this, I've narrowed it down a bit, though. It's not a CEP issue, because I can't even get the dinky "WINDOWS RECORDER" to record either.

Hmmmmmmm....

Thanks for trying.

Have you checked the Windows mixer? Double click the speaker icon in the lower right corner. In properties you can pick Recording or Playback. It sounds like the Line In is turned on for playback but not for recording.

Yeah...it was the first thing I configured, lol. After seeing this issue come up 9,000 times, I feel kinda' dumb. "LINE IN" is definitely selected in the recording properties, and the fader is all the way up in both the recording and the playback.

I intentionally installed ONLY the drivers from the SB card (not the rest of that CREATIVE crap), because I'm familiar with Windows' simple mixer.

This is really starting to piss me off, btw - It's not a great card, but it's brand damned new. I'm almost to the point where I want to trade it out with another card to at least eliminate a hardware problem...what a pain in the ass, lol.

THANKS FOR PLAYING TRAV!!!

Just for shits and giggles have you tried recording on the mic input? That would at least tell you if the problem is just in a card driver setting or if there is a total disconnect with CEP.

That's really strange that the meters work until you hit record. Are you sure CEP is setup correctly? Did you put in the reg code and everything?

I'm just about positive CEP is set up correctly for 2 reasons. First, I've tried every screwball configuration I could come up with. Second, I checked the settings against the ones on MY computer, and with the exception of the NAME of the card, they are identical in all respects...(except that mine works, and hers doesn't).

I thought about trying to record through the mic in...but I haven't done it yet b/c I really didn't know what that would tell me if it happened to work. I will try it, though, and maybe you can tell me what the results mean.

Oh, and I don't know what reg code is...so you may have to help me there, but I have reinstalled the card drivers 2x and CEP 2x...if that's related, lol.

Thanks again man...I'll post back in a minute....

The plot thickens...

Okay Tex...I set the recording input to Microphone (as opposed to LINE IN)...and I plugged into the mic input slot on the card...and it actually records that way.

It sounds like complete ass...but it works.

WTF does THAT mean?

I haven't used CEP 2 but in CEP 1 you had to put in the reg code otherwise it was in trial mode and some capabilities were turned off.

If it records the mic input then I would absolutely double check the mixer settings. Since you can hear it for monitoring that means there is no hardware failure.

Is WAV volume up for playback? If that is muted you won't hear anything that is recorded.

Is CEP set to 44.1khz? Maybe it is set to something that the SB doesn't like.

These are all the reasons I refuse to use a computer for tracking anymore :D

Yeah, you answered one of my questions...I figured if I could hear it for monitoring purposes that the card was okay.

God, the MIC input sounds like dogshit.

It's not a playback problem, btw...I can SEE the wave file when it's "recording," from the line in, and there's just nothing happening...

FUCKSHITPISS.

SO...some screwy driver thingy? maybe?

I've eliminated all the other stuff you mentioned.

Holy Mother of Moses that was frustrating. I got it working, btw...turns out it actually WAS a CEP problem.

You know those little buttons in the DEVICE SETTINGS that say stuff like:

Open 32-byte Audio Using:

3 byte Packard PCM
4 byte PCM
4 byte IEEE

They apparently matter. I changed it from the 2nd one to the first one and it started working. It was either that, or unchecking the "try as WDM" button...I'm not really sure.

Low Floor Noise To All, And To All A Good Night,
Chris

"They apparently matter"

LOL

LOL

LOL

Good mixes to all
And to all a good night
