I've been praticing my singing for a couple of years and want to record it as a demo for other studios to hear my voice and see if they except me. But what are they looking for in a demo tape? Do you think it's better to sing with someone you know like say Aliyah, but in Karaoke style so no one steals your song, or do they want a song you created on your own?

i think they just want to hear your voice, make sure you are not drowned in the mix.

Demos

John,

I believe it all depends on what you want out of it. Are you looking to get signed and become an artist under a label, do tours, make multi-platinum albums? It all depends. I know you want them to hear your voice. But for what? Now if you want the whole shabang, and you're going for being an artist and maybe a major star, then I suggest you make the best possible demo you can.

The recording industry now-a-days aren't lookin' to develope artists anymore. Not like they used to. They are looking for the finished product. Something that they can just pick up, slap their labels name on it, and sell it under them. It's all about the $$$ when it comes to the labels and such. I know for an artist, I am one myself, that that is not always the case.

So I suggest you make the best possible demo you can before sending it in. Now i'm not saying spend $50,000 and record a whole album, but do the best you can with what you have at your disposal.

Sounds like what he wants, is to be a demo singer. If thats the case you just want something that shows off your voice. When I am looking for a demo singer, I would rather get a good guitar vocal of a song that best suits the style of the singer and shows some range, then a karaoke sounding demo. Trust me just find a writer and a good song(I wouldnt recomend doing a cover) and go to a studio and laydown a guitar vocal. The problem with cover songs is one of two things. One the singer trys to sound like the original artist, or two the person listening is used to the original artist singing it and therefore is going compare you to what they have heard. I hope my rambling has been of some help.

A guitar vocal is just a demo done with a guitar and a vocal track, not full production. Guitar vocals are great if you want to show your voice or a song.
