Just a Home Recorder
Man, I hate the fact that most of the people I know that don't listen to my music. Especially females, the ones I know will literally sit there and tune out. I got 2 MTX 12" subs in my car and a custom sound system...lol How can they NOT listen? The sh*t that killed me 2day was when I was letting my homegirl check out some of my stuff, she talked through the whole 1st song almost. I don't conversate when I'm displaying my music because I expect people that I know to listen but she found a way to literally talk nonstop for 3 minutes without me responding at all... Next song... She was gazing out the window looking tuned out so I stopped the song midway through and expecting to get a "what'd you stop it for"...

Instead when the radio station came on "it's goin down" was on and she gets all excited so I purposely changed radio station to the Michael Basden show... "Why you switch stations?? That was my joint!" and had the nerve to really get mad that I wouldn't let the song play out. Later on that day she's begging me to listen to her friends music online, after telling me how good he is I checked him out I'm sitting here like "wtf?"...

"I'll shoot you, I'll kill you, My rims spin, My car is painted, I have a lot of money, I'm high, I get drunk all the time, I'm the best unsigned rapper alive, I have a grill, I got (insert model) type of gun, I like to f*ck b*tches and the infamous when I'm in da club..."

The dude was just all around garbage. I can be entertained by stuff like that sometimes if it's well put together and the flow or beat is nice. He sounded real amateurish with it, words off beat, mistakes left in, prob. a cpu mic etc... She's swearin he's gonna be the next big thing because he "keeps it real"...lmao I know dude and he's not keeping it real. Oh well...

Now I know I'm not the best artist but I know I'm good, I also know Young Joc is FAR from a good (imo). I don't understand radio heads. Just felt like venting this on here...

i'm with you man... i need full attention when i play my stuff for people. if it's a new song, i expect even more attention so i can pull some kind of critique from them when it's over so i can tweak it before the final mixdown is done for the album.

tie their hands behind their back, and duct tape their mouth shut next time, lol.

"AND LISTEN UP! you WILL be tested when it's over!!"

:D

lol i feel you on that.. i've had that done b4

but at the same time you have to kno your audience....just cause they your friends dont mean they goin wanna hear your music..... lol sad but true......

i just checked out one of your tracks the forgive me joint.... i like it personally... but you wouldn't have the same fan base as a young joc so unless you showing to either somebody who just likes music (like myself) or someone who normally listens to that brand of music u not goin to get the best responce.......

the girl u described seems to be the type of person to buy a CD and skip the "real" tracks that make you think... nothin wrong wit that but some people are just that way......

stay up and keep doin you.... thats the only way to "Keep it Real"

The problem is, the people who live and breathe music, are generally artists themselves. If you don't "dumb down" for your audience, they won't vibe out to you. I purposely dumb down my mixtape tracks and appearances, so people will be like "dude got that vibe, yo!" and buy an album. Then they're forced to listen to your true stuff...

Doesn't work on all people though. Just the dumb ones who buy into that commercial garbage.

Some folks are just so saturated with the bullshit on the radio that they diss anything else. Me personally, I think Young Joc isn't all that great, but I know some people who swear he's the shit. But I hate MCs who sound a little better than sounding like they read their lyrics off someone else's papers.

And that's a smart move. Sometimes they still feel you, sometimes they're like wtf happened.

I admit I do have my "commercialized" so to speak songs about a bunch of nothing. I can vibe with that type of music if at the very least it sounds good, but that's usually where it ends. I won't go out and buy their CD's.

The same chick loved this one (one of my older joints):

I wouldn't dare rap like that on all of my songs or even a lot of them.

But anything that I'm actually talking about something on gets no love.

Like this song Fyre mentioned (glad you liked it Fyre).

I definitely do step to that level of "dumbin down"...lol I like that term Change. When I feel unmotivated, uninspired or just plain lazy.

And yeah Fyre your right, just because they're my friends doesn't mean they want to listen to my music. But hell where's the support!?!? LOL!!

"I dumbed down for my audience and doubled my dollars/
They criticize me for it but they all yell holla/
if skills sold... truth be told /
I'd probably be... lyrically Talib Kweli /
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense /
but I did five mill... I ain't been rhyming like Common since/." - Jay Z

Welcome to the game, fam.

i think thats one of the truest lines right there.....
i couldnt have put it any better

Great thread. Most people I know like my beats, and they really comment on it and some people just talkin when I'm spinnin the beat, that's hella annoying and then I'm getting less respect for em lol.

i completely agree. totally different music on my part, but same fucking story. I want to smash peoples face in when they talk. I don't let anyone listen to my music while im there anymore because the shit happens every time, i dont like it even if they are telling me how much they like the song. save the applause for after the song you twat.

lmao i know what your sayin, well usually ppl that listen to "good" music in general hip hop/ classical/rock n e thing period are..ignorant or not open minded..umm or maybe some like to shy away from stuff dope rappers put into there music because they have issues with it or skeletons in the closet...i know there is alot of bullshit rappers out there like most of the south rappers (and if you think theres alot of south rappers who are rippin...keyword is ALOT..not alot). I too have a lil brother who does the same shit, i'll spit a verse for him, he'll be like stfu i dont wanna here that..but he pops in some young joc or somethin weak and i go to my boys who rap also and there like thats hot thats dope...lol

C jOker

haha that one ong was funny....lol the love song

Sup fellas ? been a minute for me posting but I stops in once every couple weeks to see whats up! Great Thread here.

i know a super talented mc who recently gave up. he let his cd be reviewd by a local highschool and they collectively said "man we don't wanna hear no learnin"

that was followed by a dj who told him the song was dope needs a little better engineering but that even with that its a no go because message music is not "in"

I struggle to believe that but with so many people expressing that thought is it true ???

I try to buy an album from every cat who I see selling on the streats buyt 90% of the time it is extremely poorly produced and engineered. could it be overexposure to Bad message music that turns some... most off ?

The problem is is that you have...have....HAVE to mix up your message. You know some folks will only go for your dumbed down shit. Some folks might hear the message you want to kick, but you have to get their attention first.

Look at Eminem. Most of the lyrics on the Slim Shady EP were good but he went for controversy and entertainment. It got him noticed because of that (and because he was white and pulling that off too...gotta use your strengths and play off of them). If he had come out with shit like he did in Encore it probably wouldn't have worked as well, might have worked with Dr. Dre's backing but it might have flopped too.

Just as you have to be true to yourself, you have to know how to relate to your intended audience while still being true to yourself and your style.

That is it right there. now how to achieve that ??? I don't know ? but that is the Mark !

Sometimes you have to recognize that you are just entertaining as an entertainer. Sometimes you can use your message to do that.
