King of Bling
Made ya' look.

I've worked harder on this tune than any other I've ever tried to record...and I really am beginning to hate it. I'm not looking for a "Hey man, it's not that bad" kinda' pat on the back here...Seriously, I just wanna' put it behind me.

LEVELS AND FREQUENCIES...

Once again, I APOLOGIZE FOR ALL THESE TUNES...I just don't have time to redo the thing AGAIN. I've tried recording it 4 or 5 different times, from scratch. I'm WWWAAAAYYY beyond rewriting it for the current project, but songwriting advice for future reference is cool. Of course, I have the tracks, so I can do anything to them.

Somebody with some perspective (and monitors)...help.

no...really. I'd go with the ice cream if I were you

I really love this song chris! And that's no pat on the back, god we just met ;)
The song is great from my perspective, now to be stupid

I'm no mixer, that's why I'm here to learn from you. But I feel there could be more life in the recording. I don't know if that's a good way to describe it, but from a strictly listeners point of view that's how I feel. I really like the dynamics and everything sounds clear and distinct, maybe just too clean for me. There I said it.

(Now back to grovelling) So far everything I've heard with your involvement is super. Expect some person to person questions from me when the time comes

A little hissy on the left side, and things ARE panned...aren't they? Kinda a boomy kick drum too, and some nasaly sounding vocals. Things are also verging on the ultra crispy side too.

I the high falsetto sounding voice around 1:25, was interesting. Boy or girl??.. couldn't tell.

Good enough tune, but the tune lacks something. ...like some "spunk" for a lack of words. Something to keep your interest after hearing the guitars strum away for the duration. Like the vocalist taking off into outer space with some rip-roaring vocals...something emotional. I find just changing instruments from part to part also can do wonders. Maybe it might help here.
I liked the imaginative ending.

funny you should mention ice cream ... I'm eating chocolate kind as I'm looking at this thread ... does it mean I have to listen now ?... :D

No.. it means you have to give it to me... :p

then you can listen.

Mix and Barometer...you're both hearing the thing I've been struggling against from the get go. At one point, I even had a flipping cello in there...couldn't control the lows, though.

The "crispy" thing...yeah, totally. Can it be tamed with EQ?, or is it more of a permanent flaw. And that hiss TOTALLY pisses me off...I have no idea where it comes from...but it's definitely there...not in the tracks, so it's something in my "mastering," lol.

Okay, thanks. And write back OFTEN.

(good news...only one more after this one...and the last one is GREAT!!! ..BAHAHahahah...).

thanks

Im eatin a vanilla nutty sundae cone..damn it's good.

What mixmkr said Chris...the first thing that jumped out at me was the loud hiss in the left side and the vocals are nasaly....and also what mixmkr said about it having a lack of spunk...the vocals lack conviction...it sounds like you were tired as hell when you tracked the vocals and just mouthed them out without any "spunk"..;;and also like mixmkr said again, the whole thing has a high end crispy fry sound to it....thats probably your fried ears fault though.Give it a few days rest and then go back to it.

hey,you said not to pat you on the back.:)

Trust me, my feelings cannot be hurt on this one. My microphone may be in desperate danger, though.

Thanks as always Kramer.

I'm gonna try to be brutal for you, chris.

The vocals sound like they have no low end in them.

The accoustic sounds like it has no low end also. It sounds like you really, really hyped the high end eq on the accoustic in the left channel, causing that hiss to come out.

I would choose a different sound for the snare drum...sounds like a brush...it needs more balls.

I would double the accoustic that's in the left channel to make a stereo pair of rhythm guitars, and then pan the lead (currently right channel) up the center, all starting right when the drums really come in. I would be more appealing to the ear, as well as help the song build.

The cymbals seem to cut off too soon. This might sound crazy, but try a compressor on the cymbals, using a long release time (like 1.5 seconds.) Maybe give them some extreme high end, also.

I think overall, this mix is missing a lot of low mids, due to the vocals and accoustic.

Also, that open hi hat seems too loud.

Okay, so that's it. You asked for it, and you got it!

As for the song, it's a damn, damn good song. Very emotional without being cheesy at all. Beautiful song, really man.

Great song. Great performance. A few things come to mind when I was listening... The stereo spread with the acoustics was a little too wide. It put the guitars right next to me and the voice way out in front of me. Maybe a little more verb, less pan on the guitars and less verb on the voice. When the harmonies came in, it sounded like some weird phasie effect. Is that what you were after? Maybe give the back up vocals/harmonies a little more stereo spread?

The drums were excellent. I won't go into sonics because my set-up isn't the greatest to be a judge of that. A loved the lo-fi vocal effect. That was subtle, yet very effective. Anywho, great song.

Hell no...Bahahaha...

Hey Darth and Jr#97 - Ya'll are lifesavers. Seriously. And the coolest thing is...I think I can actually do all of that....('cept removing the verb from the vocal...dammit). At least I have something (ANYTHING) I can try.

I'm motivated.

thanks again.

You're more right than you think. I like your voice.. I think it's a perfect "country" voice... but the quality you're gettin' is really the worst part of this song... that hiss has to have a source somewhere... first thing is to track that down... there can't be too many tracks on this song, so it's gotta be in there somewhere.. :p or maybe it's an effect you're using... But the primary detraction is the over-all quality of the vocals and gits... they all have that "I recorded this in my basement on my 4-track tape deck" sound... the vocals distort all too often... the gits are hollow and "hissy"... the drums are too up-front (their cheesiness is more aparent since they're so loud.) etc. etc.

That lead guitar is too "effected" and the delay on the lead vox is a bit much,... I also wasn't to hip on the odd sounding voice overs that came in every once in a while.. they seemed out of place.. but I did like the chick singin' in the background at that one part... :p (hope that one positive comment makes up for the rest of the trash I just said... )

Now,... the only reason I have no problem being so blunt is because I think this song is good, and I think your voice is good. I think this will be a great tune when you can record it really well. Speaking of which,.. what mics are you using?

WATYF

(darn.. looks like Darth beat me to all the punches... :p just do what he said,.. that may help... but I'd look into re-tracking... :D since,.. you know,... I always re-track when there's a major problem in my mixes... )

:p

WATYF: I appreciate the comments, and I endorse every one...(specially the one about my daughter!!! :D :D).

I have one mic that I record with...(ends sentence with preposition to emphasize the sloppiness of this recording).

AKG C-3000. Not the C-3000b, which I've actually heard GOOD things about...It's really bad with the Mighty "S," and I struggle with it constantly. I'm about 3 seconds away from just going back to the old SM58.

And seriously, you're spot on about every negative thing you said...but if I disagreed with you, you'd be an A-Hole.

:D
:D

thanks man,
chris

There aren't too many mics that I can identify by listening to them, but the C3000 is one of them. I was going to ask if you used one... Anywho, what format do you track to? What's in your chain? Enquiring minds.. at least mine, want to know...

dude.. you're pretty quick on the responses. do they go to your cell for or somethign? lol

damnit man!!!!!!!!!!!!

man im tryin!! iv'e read all the comment's, and i'm listening to the song for the second time...... make that the third!!!!!!

hiss left..yeah, git's to wide..yes, nasaly vocals...yeah.. but damn you can sing!!!! so who care's. high over q'ed in left channel..yes..distracting in cans not on speak's, and i think that might be the source of the hiss(almost crispy) man im just echoing statement's made, but i can't come up with anything else:rolleyes: and it's all there.

i really wanted to rip this!!!!!! damnit. but i digress.

"hey man it's not that bad";) he he

sorry i couldn't help bud.

peace

I kind of like the guitar sound ... maybe you did cut a little too much low end though ... bring them closer to center and switch with vocal level wise ... I know your not going to rerecord it but do you have version that's faster... this is kind of dragging to me ... hm...

Jr # 97 - I'm gonna' laugh JUSSST a little when I describe my "chain."

Okay, AKG mic from EBay...I sing into it. Then...hehehe...there's a cord that comes out of that and goes into my computer, and I have no clue what type of soundcard it is...wait...hang on..."SB Live," if that means anything to you.

I track and do all FX in CoolEdit 1.2. No outbound gear.

And yes, I have a direct satellite link that monitors all responses to any thread that I have started. I'm alerted by NASA, and then I just check it from there.

lol

Rick - You're gonna' have to get meaner...but as always, I MEAN it when I say "thanks."

Thanks for giving a crap!!!

Fed, I just placed you at the top of MY christmas list for that one...hehehe...I'm a wordsy S.O.B.

For fun, when I get done with repanning and dehissing, I'll post a Micky Mouse version at 2X as well. I prolly should have done that to begin with.

roflmao. good one.
