Now that's a cool Carvin!

not crazy about the bridge, but everything else rocks.

Best of all, no pointy headstock! :D

It was the state of the art bridge back in the day.

Oh, I'm not suggesting it might not be functional, I'm just too old school to like the look of it, much like the pointy headstock thing. Never really got into the headless Steinbergers either, but I did think at one time I'd like one of the basses.

I just noticed in the specs that the body is hard rock maple-Wow-what does that weight anyway?

It weighs 9 lbs. And although the bridge isn't necessarily classic looking, it's very functional - the fine tuners on mine are really smooth working and they help get it exact - the thing got pounded on by me last night and stayed in tune throughout! It also sounds great, but as was said, being maple, I had to alter my LP sounds to thicken it up a bit. Overall, it's my new workhorse, I think - I'm going to give the Standard a vacation for a few weeks....

Okay for some reason this guitar is way too bright. I cannot get it unbright enough. ANy suggestions????

Go to the forums at http://www.carvinmuseum.com/ and ask around. You'll get lots of suggestions. Mine never sounded right through Fender style amps with the original bridge pup.

Hard Rock Maple

Being a wood guy (har har), this got my attention. "WTF is Hard Rock Maple?" I asked myself. Turns out its a fancy made up name for Acer Saccharum, more commonly known as Hard Maple or Sugar Maple. I always find it amuzing when companies make up a new name for an otherwise commonly known material. Fine Corinthian Leather comes to mind.

Alas - the Carvin is no more. I traded it away because I couldn't stand the shrill sound of it. I figured that after being told by many that the maple was the reason for the sound, it wouldn't matter much to swap the pups. Besides, I am not much into tinkering with my guitars - I really just like to play them. I swapped it for a new Ibanez RG Series with a mahogany body and two humbuckers. It is a much more cheaply made instrument, and though I have never been a fan of Ibanez, this particular model is very solid and sounds vastly better than the Carvin. It also has insane low action without a hint of a buzz anywhere. What else could I need in a guitar??? :D

I am thinking of getting a bolt-on kit from Carvin sometime. I am not a fan of maple bodied guitars either. On the neck yes, but not the whole body.

You can spec all the woods in that kit.

Ya I just have to call right?

I really want a 24 fret guitar with an HSH pickup config, but they don't have it listed. I read that they have a lot of stuff not listed, so when I am ready I will call, but I ain't gonna waste their time before that.

Correct. That would be a 145 and they can do that. I thought about listing just the woods options but it'd take me like half an hour.

They've got a decent board here http://www.carvinbbs.com/

And there's the unofficial better board here http://forums.carvinmuseum.com/

I seriously tried everything with that thing - it was so damned playable, and at low volumes, super clean and even warm, but turned up it became painful! I messed with the tone on it, my amp, and my pedal, but it just stayed shrill and got thinner and pluckier. Even tho the Ibanez I have now was only $280, I've found it to be possibly on par with my Gibby in terms of playability, and last night's test run with band yielded excellent results in sound.

Oh well, another guitar gone, another guitar gained. It's all good! If only the Carvin wasn't maple. I really liked it otherwise. They certainly know how to put together a nice git...
