I had to send my new Nearfield Monitors back last week because one of them had a blown woofer right out of the box. I don't wanna start any new projects 'til I get em back so, I decided I would try a new mix on an old tune that I never was completely satisfied with.

I went back and stripped this tune completely down and left a couple of geetar tracks off, I had doubled the Vox track and now it's down to one. I played with new compressor settings and changed the Vox Reverb. To me, it sounds more open now and with better separation. (maybe just a bit too much separation on the Lead)

I left the old version up so that y'all can compare them.

The new Mix is The LORD Is Mix5

You can find them both at:

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1526&alid=304&20030119183728#8467

Please let me know which ya like best and any comments on the new mix are welcome.

BTW, if ya haven't heard it before, this is a Power Blues toon.

Thanks;

Axe4H,

First of all, I'm listening on cans, so mix comments may not be accurate. Also, I didn't listen to the previous mix and nowhereradio is slow as they come tonight, so I'll have to compare it someother time.

I love the guitar sound. Really cool chops! The bass sound is superb, at least on the cans.
I did not really like the reverb on the vocals, it does sound too "seperated", but it does give it an old "bluesy" feel, so I guess that's what you were going for... Maybe use a slightly larger room or something...

Reall nice job, in any case! I always enjoy a good blues tune.

1st version- I remember this...I think I cracked a joke about George Thoroughgood quitting drinking and going to church. :) Hope that didn't offend you or anything...

Switching to the new version now..

You've got a nice sound stage going on...lead to the left, rhythm mostly to the right, vocal right down the middle. I personally think we need a little bit more rhythm in the left...just 2 or 3, maybe 4 dB's just to round things out through the verses. I don't believe you'll have too much of a problem with clashing with the lead. I do hear some rhythm guitar highs coming from the left, but not enough lows. Just a thought...

This sounds terrific...nice and clean. I LOVE the guitar sounds. Perfect for this IMO... That rhythm sounds like it's in just the right place to me. Your use of level and reverb to create the rhythm guitar's space is very good there.

Overall a big improvement! Nice work...

:cool:

Oren;

Good to hear from ya Bro! I mixed it on cans so it may be more accurate than ya think! LOL Thanks for the ideas. I'll give em a shot.

SLuiCe;

Hey Bro! I remember the your comment and actually took it as a compliment.

OK, what I have done is duplicated the Rythymn Track. The track on the right is panned hard right and is running about -9db. The Lead track is panned at 9 o'clock so I panned the Duplicated Rythymn to the same place and have it running at about -12db so the Lead actually covers it when the scatting is going on with the Vox. I also raised the Peak Limiter on the output another 2db. This toon is getting LOUD! LOL Going to play with some different Verbs for the VOX too. I'll upload it sometime to see whacha think!

Thanks for the listens y'all!

Hey AXE!!

Nice to hear your music again. I dun dig the blues and swear by the power invested in me that I'll record (when I have my studio back up:( )and post some blues so's you can rip my songs apart on a blues level.

At any rate, I listened and have a couple suggestions and alot of love for the tune overall.

Nice git and arrangment (arangment in the blues can be a silly issue but, I like this standard attack)

I think the vox could benifit from some reverb, they arent' that great. Not bad but, not great and they stick out like a sore thumb on a foot:) :D :rolleyes: :mad: :p

I'd try and coat them a bit with verb and place them in the mix about where they are now.

i'd also pan the lead git towards center when it has the musical "spotlight" and let it sit on the side, as it does now, for those killer fills. Give the git some headlining man......

I don't know diddly about drums in any regard but, if you could get that kick and snare to pump and pulse and drive more, I think the "fort" would be held down more securely.

And lastly (now that you hate me and my stupid suggestions that are so easily and flipantly given outside of your world:) ;) ) I didn't care for the distorted tone of the rhythm git on the right. Perhaps a cleaner tone with more definition and contrast to lead would sound better/fuller.

I realize you are remixing and not recording but, I jotted down a bunch of notes while listenting and wanted to pass them all along. Furthermore, don't take these comments as an insinuation that I don't like the song or mix. I downloaded it and will listen again out of sheer joy, so there!!

Peace and progress,

Theron.

Theron;

:cool: Cool Bro, You took this thing apart in you head just about like I did track by track the last time. This time next week, I should have my new set of SP-5B monitors back from Musicians Friend and can tell more about how much Verb I actually have happening on the Vox. The blown set arrived back there at 10:45 yesterday according FedEx tracking. :D

If I could change pan settings on the fly with my current recording program, I would have. But PowerTracks 8 doesn't have a mixdown feature. However, I just got a Fostex VF-160CDR this past Saturday and it does have mixdown. I might have to transfer the tracks from the puter via CDR and learn how to use it. ;) Hmmmmm, I could even go for a new rythymn sound and see if I like it.

I'm here to listen and learn. This stuff will eventually be going on CD.

Thanks;

Yep,yep! right here. Hey Ax, I listened to this the first time around...big big improvement. Guitars are slamming man..great tone for this. Bass and drums are thick too. Only nitpick from me would be try another reverb on vocals and there was a time or two where it sounded like the vocal was a fraction late. Great shredding man! Enjoyed this...

Really really nice man. This has been well polished. I like the guitar voice, 'Fat Strat?
Thick, tight, clean, clear. nice hashing on the guitar. The vocal has life and emotion in it. I get the notion you stomp your foot at times while your picking,... cool. :)
Makes me feel another recipe coming, maybe jus a little more down tempo, coming in on the back side, from the top, "..Even Jesus cried the Blues".
Keep on kicking man, good job! :)

Nice work. Good blues playing. Guitars sound great in there. Something about the drums bugged me a little. Too much highs??? I'm listening on puter speakers and no one else mentioned it, so maybe I'm just all wet :D. The vocal seems like it should sit back a little more somehow. Almost too upfront IMVHO. Not much though... and not in all spots...maybe a little (or little more) compression and a little verb?

love them blues. no bull shit. straight blues. a great listen this morning. good chops.

David, Toki, Jag, Dan, thanks for the listen and comments, Bros!

Toki,
I like the guitar voice, 'Fat Strat?
Nah, Axis on the Lead and Main Rythymn. Standard Trem on it, not a Floyd.
