Hey everyone!

I just finished mix 1 of a new one. This time, I stole the plot from Herbert's Dune.

Mix 1 MP3 | FLAC

lyrics said:
Treachery within treachery within treachery within KNIFE FIGHT!
Treachery within treachery.

Flee, witch, flee! The Duke is dead.
The Muad'Dib must crown his head,
And lead the Fremen of the sand,
And ride the worm, and rule the land.

repeat chorus

The Spice must flow. The rain must fall.
Inbreeding will save us all.
So wield crysknife, and see through time,
And avenge your grandfather's crime.

repeat chorus

And we, the concubines, shall be known as wife.

Watch time flow, inexorable.
Your Jihad beyond your controll
You are not master of your fate.
You can't save them; it is too late

And we the concubines shall be known as wife.
The Empress shall live lonely all her life.

repeat chorus

Interesting sounds in the intro. Some slight timing things in the first few bars? I can't make head nor tail of the lyrics, but I've never read that book. Mind you any song about concubines gets my vote.

The book's pretty weird. Lot's of pretty insensible stuff happens.

I'm not sure I hear the timing issues. Any more detail on that?

Most of the weird percussion is actually samples from the old Blake Stone shareware game! :D

heh... Dude... I love the chorus. Somehow, I hear this as being re-tracked as a death-metal song. Complete with machine-gun kicks and guitar riffs... Good stuff, man.

Thanks PI.

If you want to volunteer to retrack a death metal version, you have my blessing! I doubt I could pull it off myself!

tis' a bit bizzarre, somewhat gives me a violent femmes kinda vibe but not really. Good clean mix.... are the drums live or prog? can't tell, thats a good thing. a family that lays together stays together. It could be the next logical step in evolution. an extra chromosome never hurt anyone.

Your tracks are getting tighter and cleaner each time VHS. Y'know...to my ear, this is still kinda odd sounding relatively speaking, but I feel like I'm hearing gradual steady improvement with each mix over time. This one is fun.

Thanks guys!
Jsebastiano, the drums are a combination of live, sequenced, and procedurally-generated drums. Herbert was kind of a fan of the weird monster sex in his books. For some reason, one of the major plot points of Dune was that royal families inbreeding would somehow produce the chosen one.

Heat. Man! Wouldn't that be depressing to not get any better! (Of course, it's almost as depressing to listen to recordings I did two years ago and flinch at how bad they are!)

Agree this mix is tighter and cleaner than earlier ones I've heard - the mix just sounds like it's got more room to breathe than me. You've developed a sound which is very much your own, which I think's great and each tune you post up adds to that creation of yer own world.

Are you a fan of Grandaddy at all? I think I hear some kind of kindred spirit between your and their works - especially in the mix of lo-fi synth and guitar, if not the vocals. If not, I'd recommend getting to listen to either their Sophtware Slump or Under the Western Freeway. The first one is something of a concept album about technology in the modern world with songs about alcoholic robots and animals living in abandoned washing machines etc

The main nit I had with your tune is that having that buzzy distorted guitar throughout the song became a bit distracting - I think it's an interesting effect, but would be better used more sparingly and only in parts. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Rob.

I've heard one or two Grandaddy songs. They seem decent.

You may be right about the super-distorted guitar. Unfortunately, that's the one I play live, so dropping it from the recordings doesn't seem like a good idea. (The live mix is: procedural drums, synths, lead vox, and super distorted rhythm guitar/bass.)

This is much better than "Beserker". It's panned better, the sounds are more distinctive, and the vocal tracks sounds better.

Thanks, Greg.

Other than the panning, the technique is actually mostly the same. You could probably chalk it up to dumb luck! :D

The distortion is effective but not my personal fave mainly cause it's new to me. The vocals are nice and clear so it's not causing any issues. After a chorus + lyric I thought "This guy HAS to write for the theatre". Absolutely original, musical and interesting. :D
