To make this song... Im sorry but alternative music leaves me wondering "Wheres the freakin cream filling?" AKA guitar solo.
So I made an alternative song about alternative guitar players/song writers and added a guitar solo at the end....
I hate the way this mix sounds, its very hard to mix distorted guitar for me and the drums sound like muted spoons and a cardboard box. BUT hey, I compressed the living shit out of the tune just like the big guys do and what do ya know :D

the song is called Alternative Boy, its at the bottom...

Some more great playing there. I got a kick out of the lyrics too. Sorry I can't really comment on the mix since I don't yet know what I'm doing. Rock on Sigma9

HA!

Does anyone really know what they are doing? nYou should comment anyway that way you can start to develope your Mixing "Sense". Compare your comments to other people and so on.
Man... if I could sing good Id be dangerous....

"Crack Whore" is still the single funniest phrase in the English vernacular. Maybe you don't sing as well as you play guitar, but I think "great" singing is a really subjective thing, except for singing that really sucks (off key, bad timing, etc.)., and yours doesn't suck at all.

One star my ass.

Take care, you nazi looking guitslinger, you. :D :D :D

:D

kick ass groove... who put the blanket over your guitar cabinet?
Hey, what's wrong with 3 chords and a cloud of dust... crack dust at that? Besides, I paid full price for that 1.99 CD... I'm a true fan of alternative! the music that is.. not the alternative life style

hey, you slipped in a guitar solo.. you broke the alternative decree... nice playing, man. Very Satchesque solo.

Another good one....you have some real talent man. Your singing is fine. I think most people (myself included) are too critical of their own singing. just listen to whoever it is that you really like and I guaruntee that they don't sing dead on pitch all the time. Even the great singers like Sinatra and Marvin gaye slid all over the place when they sang. What makes a good singer is phrasing and expression more than a classically perfect in-tuneness.
So I found your vocals to be appropriate to the song and, of course, you play your ass off. Now if you could only get me in your band you'd be on your way. :D

(really man....you play your ass off)

the singing is ok...it'll get better with time. The flange guitar (that doesn't occillate)....I don't really care for that sound. The rest of everything I like ok.

I just had to come back and say the solo rocks. you can shred just fine young man...very nice.

Thanks guys

I am very critical about my singing because I know how I would like to sound, and well you cant go around triple tracking your vocals forever. Im working on something way more meaningful and im stuck at the chorus for lyrics ATM. I had alot of fun making Alt-boy, Oh and JR that blanket over my cabinet is called TONE, I tried wool first but down works best for warm tones. :D

dude, your singing was great. I wasn't aware that you were using a flanger for that guitar tone... I was thinking maybe it was a mic placement issue or something. Either way, your playing kicks ass regardless of whether I thought the down was too thick... ever consider a solar thermal blanket? thinner and all shiny like...

cool song man.....however....lmao...um.....this totally describes me......well..i mean my dads not aporno star.....but the "3 chords ".....DEFINATLEY applies.....and well ...its just really funny...:D

great song..(solo was pretty sweet...now if only you coulda played it with less notes...it WOULD be alternative..)....

thanks

It sounds like it has been compressed to death..

cool tune, and the solo is great too, but the overall mix sounds really squashed imhop.. I liked it though..

nice to hear some real playing.. (unlike my own)

I liked the track. I really like the tome on the guitars. Slight Satriani influence. I'm not sure if it was intended but it worked.

I have to agree with your comments about the absence of solos in alternative stuff.

Well Done!

PJH.

hmmm-you kind of pointed out the sound probs yourself-(the drums and cymbals especially)-I didnt care for the guitar tone too much-I couldnt distinguish the chords with that flange sound...Do you use the same sound for rhythm and soloing? maybe looking at each seperately would help I dont know...The vox were hmmm-well i like zappas vocals so i guess i can't say too much about these. The soloing didnt really do it for me either-though i did like those interval jumps-I guess it was tapping??not sure..Sheesh I feel like the bad guy after reading all these rave reviews-I listened to another one "popwaltz"-it was a nicely arranged and played tune..

Ok sigma....

Wanted to respond to this thread when it came up, but I was under the "No 500th post until I post a song" moratorium at the time.

Very kick ass groove, and the delivery of the lyrics is very chic. Guit playing is cool... reminds me of Nuno Bettencourt. The REAL problem here seems to be the huge tilt in the sound spectrum toward the highs... 8kHz is just louder than hell, and the lows are all but pushed out. IMO it would work better as a mix with the cymbals down about 5db, and everything else that's boosted at around 8kHz to not be boosted anymore. Then the mix would approach that good balance the track needs.

It's a worthwhile song to work on the mix with, tho. Check my toon if you get a chance. Thanx.
