I feel stupid asking this, but...

I have a few different mics and they all have the 1/4" plug at the end. Do I need an adapter to go from the 1/4" to the smaller one that plugs into the back of the sound card? or do I need to get a separate module that goes between the two (mic and sound card)?

dont plug anything into the mic in on a sound card- those are for the shitty mic that came with you puter- you need a pre-amp to go between the mic and the "LINE IN" on your sound card- do a search- see button top right

thanks for the welcome. I've been reading from this message board for a couple days and have learned a whole bunch.

there was actually an article on this site addressing my question. It suggested that I use a console mixer going to the sound card. Since I have a 12-channel mixer, I'm good to go. Think I just need the right cables now.

This is gonna be alot of fun.

Sure, and you can use a dime as a screwdriver. But there will be certain limitations on what you can accomplish.

you'd be better off using your home stereo for monitoring if you have the aux RCA ins on it.

You can plug your mic straight into your soundcard but yeah..its not the best way to go..i did it for a year and got 'ok' results but having a mixer is a no-brainer...use it!

Track with headphones so you can hear exactly what your putting in and use a simple hi-fi to mix. Your big speakers wont do you any favors with your bass levels or vocals. Keep reading and learning...it cant get any cheaper than this!
