Can anyone explain to me WTF Mackie was/is thinking when they designed their new Onyx mixers? All of the direct outs are NOT post EQ. WTF is that all about? How the hell would I use one of these things if I want to use their new EQ? I’m talking about in a recording environment not live.

The purpose would be so you could send the un-EQ'd signal directly to a recorder. If you had been using the mixer in a "live" scenario, then your EQ is for that particular room, not what you need for recording. So after you your tracks down, you can EQ how you like, dont' worry about EQing too much while you're tracking....save that for the mixdown.

I understand that. And I usually don't do much EQ during tracking. But I have when tracking acoustic drums and I't nice to have that option. I must be spoiled by the I/O capability of my el cheapo Alesis mixer.
:D

Remember this thing too.....if you record w/ EQ on, and realize later you should have taken a different EQ approach, then the EQ that you've set while tracking is permanently on tape as is.

What are you recording to?

Delta 1010 but I'm not doing drums at this time. But plan on doing more down the road. I use a stand alone pre for Vox and acoustic GTR...funny thing is I use the Meek EQ when tracking and Vox seem to always work in the mix but I have had problems with acoustic GTR. I'll have to do some dry tracking on acoustic and run it back through my Meek EQ during mix....Or just do two tracks when tracking.

Quick edit on this.....one point I want to make too is that I always try to get things sounding right during tracking and that "could" mean use of EQ so that's where I see limitations on those Onyx Mixers.

Just use one track dry and playback through the EQ. Good luck!!!!

Edit....whenever you track, leave all the EQ knobs on the Onyx straight up....that way the EQ is flat. Are you playing back through the onyx too? if so, you can use the EQ there for the final, or just use your Joe Meek...

No, no...I don't have an Onyx....I'm interested in them. But then I'm always looking at consoles. Even digital one's.
:)

i guess since i map out the song ahead of time, i dont have much interest in changing the eq that i would set going into the recording. thanks for the heads up about them not being post eq...i had a buddy looking at it
