I don't remember if I ever posted this one.

A weird session for sure. At another studio, never having heard the artist before. 25 hours to record and mix 9 songs! No drummer. Apperantly, the drums were to be added later. Okay......

Used an O2-R and NS-10's. ADAT XT 20's.

Had to cut a buttload of low end while mastering as a result of mixes on somewhat unfamiliar monitors in a room that is horrible.


A damn good singer though.

That's an *incredibly* big, clear, rich and sweet sound you get on those guitars. What'd you mic them with, do you remember?

And yes, I kept wanting drums to come in, nothing ordinary, but some kind of subtle syncopated stuff.

It sounds like she sang it in two parts - she almost comes in on top of her own voice at places.

What a nice sound - ace work, but I feel crappy now. I may just jack it all in. Bastard. I'm not even close.

4050 through ART Pro MPA for acoustics. SM-57 through ART Pro MPA for electrics. 4050 Through Pro MPA for voice. Bass was DI'ed, using a Countryman DI going to ART Pro MPA.

The Spectralizer plug in was added at mastering. This seemed to really make the guitars stand out a lot better. But, I am not happy about the lack of space around the guitars. Damn digital anyway!!!

Don't give up. Just put in the hours.

Great recording. I also loved the guitars and the use of reverb to space things from the listener. It seemed like the guitar moved a couple times (panning-wise). Did that actually happen or am I hearing things? Whatever it was, I loved whatever you did then. I'll have to relisten to tell you the exact spots.

RevE, very astute. Hearing that guitar move tells me two things, you are REALLY paying attention to what you are listening to, and that you have a very good monitoring system.

Yup, it moves. Not anything I did. Not on the original .wav either. A result of bad processing while in Wavelabs. It is frustrating because I can hear it happening on ANY song that I use any DirectX plug in's on. I was reading some stuff on www.digido.com that said to expect this kind of thing to happen on digital systems that use low bit processing (like in the 24 bit range. many high end digital processors use up to 72 bit processing).

A frustration? Yes! Annoying? Yes! Much I can do about it? NO!!!

I do find though that the effect is hightened when the .wav is converted to .mp3 with any encoder, so you would probably notice a little less on the original .wav file or off of a authored CDR.

I am no fan of pure digital processing on low end DAW's, or low end digital mixers like the O2R. When I first started using them, I didn't notice little stuff like this, but it is getting to be far more obvious now. It makes me want to get rid of everything I use for recording/editing/mastering finale mixes and get a Studer 1/2 track with Dolby SR to deal with it all, then fly it into the computer just to make the finale CDR. This digital thing is really frustrating. Collapsing stereo imaging, depth loss, hard sounding eq's, etc.....

Very nice recording as always Ed. Great sounding guitars. Vocalist reminds me a little of late 80s Madonna in some places and another vocalist that I can't seem to place, but have heard recently (which will now drive me crazy until I figure out who.) Great voice for sure, and very familiar sounding. I could have done with less reverb on the vocal, as I really noticed it when I first listened. I do like vocals on the dry side though. I don't think many people at all would notice the problems you mentioned, even after you after told them.
 
That sounds great, even without drums. I guess I am getting use to hearing many musicians go without drums these days that it is not that big of deal for me anymore.
