It's been a long time since I've written anything.

I got a Delta 1010 and started recording bands. I suck at that. Someday I'll have something to post here on that subject, but not yet.

I recorded this Cakewalk MIDI composition @ 24/96 and encoded to 128Kbps .mp3. Sound Forge told me that the file clipped. I didn't hear a clip. I adjusted the volume on the .wav file in increments until the clip notification on the encoded file went away- that took a 0.25 dB volume cut on the .wav file and left the encoded file maxed out at -0.3dB. So I went with the original encode- which sounded better to me.

The emotional kindling for this piece is the seeming descent of Amerika into a deep hole, the likes of which it hasn't known since
way before my grandfather came ashore in the late 19th century.
In fact it has NEVER known such decline. The country has always been on the rise, even amidst severe adversity.

True enough- the rest of the planet is descending faster and harder but that doesn't make me feel any better.

If I stare at your avatar closely enough....and crank the headphones, maybe my portfolio will make sense. Roland gear??

as always, a pleasure to listen to one of your tunes.. :)

Okay, I'm not gonna' lie. I don't think the odds are too good that I'll find myself driving down the highway with the top down and the player blaring out this song, but I'm nobody anyway. I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I listened, and it was not boring in the least. I hope I don't sound like a complete ass, but I certainly can sound that way, despite my intentions.

Midi On!
Chris

I don't think it clipped, either. Trust the ears, not the meters.

I don't think America's descending too hard and fast, despite the economy and threat of war. I'm heartened by some of the debate about the war inside the US. That's not because I love a debate, but because it demonstrates a natural range of opinion that's allowed to express itself. I'd be far more worried if the whole country seemed to be going along with this or that policy.

The song's good, though. It's funny - on my sixth run through, it's starting to sound way more beautiful. The first time through, what jumped out at me were the taunting voices. The beautiful stuff emerged more slowly as I listened again and again. I'm even hearing those lovely bell tones behind the taunting voices at the beginning now. That bit that starts at 0.44 - I keep thinking that it was probably intended to carry a sad feeling, but it just comes across as beautiful.

you gotta lotta ideas in ya head. You need to put more to disk. :) I enjoyed listening and as always learned something about arrangement, placement, and depth. Nice tune.

now see....this is the great thing about music.....2 people can get 2 COMPLETELY opposite..things from the same piece of music..to me....this sounded like my cat running back and forth on the piano......i mean a cat with really cool ideas...but still......but i have a pretty small musical scope ..so......:D

ok...just to be fair..i listened to this again.....and man if this DID clip that would be a welcome distraction......the strange dichotomy..here is this.....the recording is absolutley pristine...but the content ..well...it ..isnt..so what this "song".exemplifies to me is a ...gift wrapping a big bag of dog poo.........?

sorry..
jamal.....i really did listen twice...im not sure why?...but i thought i owed you that much..:D

I'm not sure the explination even comes close. America decending some freaky nightmare. Cartoon characters chasing me around a highschool globe while it spews snot all in my hair...I work so hard on my hair.

Seriously is this a comedy peice?

Ah, the uninitiated. I used to wonder if Doc had breathed in a few too many fumes at work. But now I know it for sure. Really though, I have a personal copy of _Get Down From There_ which I'm glad I own. After a while, this stuff grows on you. Yes, somewhat like a fungus.

Anyway, Doc... I listened to the piece before reading your description and it made me giggle a bit. Not a subject that's a laughing matter, but that was my reaction, capriccio.

You dont have to delete it Chris.LOL.what the fuck was I spelling?:D

Which upload did you hear?I uploaded 2 very bad recordings.LOL.One was a 4-track thing from 10 years ago.

damn,you deleted before I posted....now my post looks a little out of place. ;)

I caught 'Imaginary Lover"

That was a really good job. I don't care how old it was.

Thanks for all the comments

>this sounded like my cat running back and forth on the piano......

I actually used that technique on the CD that PG mentioned. I was recording a MIDI track when the little monster jumped onto the keyboard. When I played the track back, I found she had jumped on the keys in perfect time with the music so I kept the rather dissonant chord and worked it into the composition.

>I listened to the piece before reading your description and it made me giggle a bit

Nope. Dead serious. But:

Decay can be humorous. The hilarity of victorious Entropy. Along the lines of watching someone topple a house of cards that someone else has spent weeks constructing.

>the recording is absolutley pristine

I'll bet mixmkr could locate the 16 bit Roland grit..... :)

>gift wrapping a big bag of dog poo.........?

LOL. That's straight out of Pink Flamingoes!

"They can't send ME a turd!"

Bop-a-ooh-mau-mau. Very cool as usual Doc.

ah... a sarcastic piece... very brite, but intentionally a-tonal... with some more structure, imo this could fly e.g. a repeating figure, or something... otherwise, sad to say, it would be fairly easy to approach by anyone with say... a synthesizer & a bag of herbs.

Some more elements like real drums, or something providing some backbone would legitimize it, imo... but at this point it's a few steps above Baby's First Piano lesson... :) (joke)

Not my thing, obviously, but it definitely conveys a mood... so at least you get that with it. Thanks for letting us hear it, Doc.

>but at this point it's a few steps above Baby's First Piano lesson...

Never had any lessons. Sorry. I'm totally self-taught.

>it would be fairly easy to approach by anyone with say... a synthesizer & a bag of herbs

I promise to download and listen hard to any such attempt.

No herbs here for this piece..... :(
