I don`t understand the parametric EQ in Reaper..

How do you use it? How do you set the "Q" is this the same as envelope?

This helped me to understand "Q". My layman's understanding is that a Para EQ allows you to target specific frequencies to cut or boost. A tool for precision surgery on a signal.

[The "Q" allows you] "the ability to alter the bandwidth [or ‘Q'] over which the cut or boost will be applied. ‘Q' - standing for 'quality' - is an alternative term to refer to the width of each EQ band, where high Q = narrow bandwidth, and low Q = wide bandwidth."

"The Q set at 1.0 means the cut or boost will affect 1 1/3 octaves from the centered band. If the Q is set at 3, it will boost or cut "1/3" octaves from the centered band."

Q Setting Bandwidth

0.7 = 2 Octaves
1.0 = 1 1/3 Octaves
1.4 = 1 Octave
2.8 = 1/2 Octave "

Just to correct Dale's post, setting the Q to '3' will give a 1/3 octave bandwidth (not 3 octaves).

yeah i have this PDF file thats helping me wrap my head roun all this stuff..My problem is I can`t find how to do it in Reaper...when I open the parametric EQ it just shows 3 faders no band graph at all..

Try turning the gain up 12dB, the Q or width up all the way and move the frequency around. Now set the Q or width all the way down and move the frequency around. After that turn the gain all the way down and repeat the other stuff with Q/width and frequency. A graph helps but what will matter in the end is how it sounds.

I think you are using the JS:filters/parametric_EQ. I use the ReaEQ. You can add as many bands, to tweak as you would like, and assign them to your desired frequencies.

Thanks man this is what i was looking for and you were right i was using the parametric...this is a parametric..BTW the bandwidth fader is th "Q" right?

Basically yes. Higher Q means narrower bandwith. It can be confusing.
