I need 20 channels. Will a MOTU 896mk3 with two Motu 8pre's ADAT in give me as good or slightly better sound? I like the sound of the Mackie but need more channels......all im looking for is something that sounds at least as good as what I have!

Thoughts please!

Thanks so much

If you are going to spend that much just get the 24i/o?

Sure YorkshireTrippe

I record our band live every Sunday morning.

It consists of:

8 Drum Mics
2 Electric Guitars
1 to 2 Acoustics (normally 1)
2 - 3 Vocals
2 keys
2 Crowd Mics
Bass

That's 20 channels on a full morning! I'm already running the Macki Onyx 1640 with fire wire card option added, so I could also just daisy chain another Mackie 1220i for less than a grand which would give me 20 XLR inputs right off the bat....

The Chicken Master....Im really new to recording so I dont know what all else I would need.....thats what is slowing me up! Learning as fast as I can.

Im not sure if you can daisy chain the "i" series with the original Onyx mixers. Check Mackies support forum. I bet you could pick up another 1640 on eBay at a good price. Those would chain together no problem. But I thaught I read where the old and new i series dont chain together. I may be wrong. I have a 1640 and Im thinking of buying the 1640i. But I dont need more than 16 channels. Yet :)

It was marketed that way, but in the time I owned the 1220, I constantly saw complaint after complaint in the Makie forums from people who could not get it working. Mackie left the original Onyx owners out in the cold with non-existent driver support.
