Well,

Let's see..... in the last week alone, here's what I aquired:

1 Shure Beta 52 (already had one but he sold it dirt cheap)
1 MXL603 off ebay
1 MXL603 and 2001 combo pack from MF
2 ECM8000 from MF
1 Midiman Midi Buddy from MF
A new guitar case for my Telecaster from MF
1 Tascam ATR 60-8 1/2" reel to reel.
140' of cable from Markertek

I can't stop buying Mics!!! With the above included, I'm reaching the 30 mics mark.

Is there a cure for this condition?

Now.... what other mic can i buy to hold me over unitl my next purchase?

But an Elam or a Soundelux and you won't have any money left for another purchase! That will cure you...
 
yeah....you need to buy mics that are worth a shit..

Why would any home reccer need 30 mikes ? :confused:

rushfan- spend some of that mic money a a couple of channels of high-quality preamp. Universal Audio M-160, Grace 101, Peavey VMP2, Sytek, Langevin, etc.

Exactly my sentiments.

Most home studios only need 2 good large diaphragm condonsers, about 6 Sm 57's and some sort of bass drum mic

And thats only if you regularily record live drums.....

I have
1- AT 4033
1- SM 57
1- Audix D2
1- Apex Bass Drum Mic
1- Sm57 Knockoff (not the real thing, but sounds like it)

And a few other shit mics, that are just laying around and will NEVER be used for recording so I won't count them.

Spend the money elsewhere...

I think it depends on what you're trying to do.
I'm guilty of mic over kill in a way too, but to date I have had the opportunity to record:
Grand Piano
Guitar Cab
Acoustic Guitar
Vocals (male and female)
Violin
Viola
Flute
Saxophone
Bass Clarinet
French Horn
A small ensemble consisting of:
2 violins, and 2 violas

Some of the woodwinds and brass were purely experimental recording "sessions"; practices really, just for me to learn some recording chops for those instruments.

Accquiring mics (and other gear) depends also on what your long term goals are.
If all you think you'll be recording is heavy metal thrash bands, then yeah, a hand full of 57's and a couple good vocal condensors, some inexpensive SD condensors and you're set.

The mics I have are:
SM57 (3)
SM81 (2)
SM7 (2)
Blue Mouse
RCA 77DX
MXL V67
MC 012 (2)
ECM8000 (2)
TLM 103 (2)
SP T3
C1000s
CAD ST100 (Boundary Mic)

I drive all of these mics using a pair of vintage Audix 35102 mic pres in a Brent Averil rack. I have some onboard mic pres in my Yamaha mixer too. My chain is completed by an 8 I/O AD/DA converter from Steinberg while recording into "Nuendo" via an RME 96/52 audio card.
I've SLOWLY accquired this gear over time, working to develop my ears and skills for a variety of situations. During that time I have learned to look for deals, and always buy quality, or at the very least, something you won't outgrow in 6 or 9 months.

For future gear accquisition, I'm on the look-out for a nice, High Quality outboard compressor, as well as something like a Lexicon 81 or 91 for reverb.
I think, that by doing this, I've been able to put together a really nice signal chain while developing my skills over time, and I don't have any "throw away" gear.
Of course, at some point, I'd like to start charging for this, but I don't feel like I'm quite ready to do that.

So, you see, it really depends on your goals, both long, and short term.

As Michael Jones said - when you get into the pre-amp addiction stage it gets worse.

I've got 5 condensors and about a couple of dozen dymanics (I've been a gigging drummer for years - so I've accumulated a whole lot of 57's and other "drum mics").

But - now that I've discovered the joy of pre amps I've accumulated 5 - and I'm eyeing up a couple of others.

Gear addiction is not the worst type of addiction - but it does make your veins collapse faster.
 
Well, Up until about two weeks ago, I wasn't a "home recorder". I had a studio where I recorded bands regularly (not to suggest I'm pro) and all the mics were needed. I gave up the studio location , which was roughly $1000 a month. I gave it up because of a new baby! I purchased this new gear on recommendations from this board. After reading posts from YOU people and now your asking why I bought all this stuff. You people are confusing!!:D

Now that I have no real location to record in, I have to put everything in storage until I get another place (ie. a new home large enough to accommodate all the equipment).

At home, which is only about 550 sqft (crammedwith my wife and a new child), you can imagine that there's no room. I have to buy things suitable for home recording on my PC, which I'm running Cakewalk with a Delta 44. I don't want to bring out the Neumann while the kid is throwing his Cheerios around.... ya know!! :cool:

So now I'm restructuring a bit until I get a new place. Now that I'm saving $1000 a month, I can start looking for preamps. As a matter of fact, I almost bought two UA1176's last week but someone snagged them before I could get back to him. I'm selling all the Alesis crap as we speak. Even if 6 Alesis peices only gets me enough money for one great pc of gear... then so be it. One great piece is far better than 6 crappy pieces....right?

So get off my back and be happy for me will ya!!!:D

Don't tell your wife you have all this gear. Next think you know you'll be selling it off a piece at a time. Been there done that.

550 sq'? That is small. I used to live in an 800 sq' home and that was rather cramped.

You have a nice collection of gear. Keep yer mouth shut about it.

I kind of have no choice on the wife issue. she's gonna see all this stuff tomorrow when I have to bring it all home. I'll just tell her that I need at least 32 mics because I have 32 channels on my 32-8. Then I'll tell her that I need 8 more "thingy's" for the 8 buss faders or it won't work properly.

It would be difficult to hide an ATR and a 32 channel console.
