I am trying to set up Cakewalk for the first time and I am having some trouble. I can record an audio track in either a new project or in one of the prearranged projects but I can only hear the midi stuff from the prearranged tracks while recording mine. I can not listen to a prerecorded audio track while recording a new one although I can hear what I am doing as the new track. Am I doing something wrong or is this on board sound card just not going to cut it? I am using Guitar Studio and W2K.

Also can anyone recommend a good instructional book for Cakewalk?

What is the sound card? Is it full duplex? Do you have the option set to record during playback.. start there...

The sound card is an on-board Intel 810 Chipset. I'm not sure if it is full duplex except that I can hear the prerecorded midi examples while I play.

What exactly is the option to record during play back? So far I have Created a track then disarmed it, armed my second track and selected record. I can then only hear what I am currently playing.

Not sure for Guitar Studio, but if it's anything like Cakewalk Pro then it should be under the Options|Audio then on the general tab. Check there first. If not, try hitting F1 and looking up simultaneous record and playback or something close to that. Should be able to find it.

Full Duplex means to be able to record while hearing playback not just hearing what your playing during playback. Can you run the wave profiler to find out? Maybe I should DL the demo of guitar studio and check this out myself. But somewhere it should tell you your card is capable of full duplex. Look for it.

Good luck.
