Even on the count in, there's just no sound. I'm using Home studio 2004 XL with windows XP pro. Any ideas?

The metronome is MIDI. You need to have a MIDI device in order to hear it.

What sound card are you using?

while I'm waiting for the Delta 1010 I bought on ebay to come back from the M-Audio repair shop (yeah, hosed again on e-bay) i'm using the stock card in my computer-MPU-401 compatable MIDI device.

But the MPU-401 is just an interface. Have you connected any MIDI devices to it?

If you have not, then you won't hear the metronome.

the MIDI output is to the edirol and dyad softsynths, all my MIDI tracks play just fine.

Yes, but Sonar needs a hardware synth (either standalone or soundcard with onboard sounds) to play the metronome.

Or you can try the Ping DXi.

I figured that was the reason we've NEVER been able to get MIDI sound for the metronome. We have only a controller, no sound module hardware.

But the PC Speaker option isn't working either. It has worked on the soundMax card on our other machine (albeit faintly, we could hear it clicking), but with the temporary "new" machine (til the 1010 is back), the sound card of which is ""via ca'97 Enhanced audio [wave]" (according to Home Studio), no clicks.

Until I muted the CD volume control in the system mixer, I was getting a lot of noise, as well, so I'm wondering if it's a soundcard setting which I haven't been able to find. The CD volume control was the only one that seemed to make any difference in what I hear in the headphones. If I turned it up, the noise increased. If I muted it, the noise disappeared.

One other thing that's different since we were able to hear the PC Speaker clicks for the metronome: we've added a headphone amp, which we never used on the soundMax (where it did click), plugged into the line out of the sound card, instead of plugging the headphones into the PC speakers' headphone jack.

When you select PC speaker as metronome, the sound won't come out of the soundcard (in general). It will come out of the little speaker mounted inside of your computer.

For it to work, the speaker needs to be connected to your mainboard.

What I do is create my own click track using DXi's.

Create a MIDI track and put 4 hits on the quarter note of one full measure (for 4/4 time). You can use anything you choose for the sound - side stick, cow bell, tamborene). Then copy and paste that measure for the entire length of the song and route the MIDI track to the DXi of your choice.

In fact, if you are using Sonar 3, it features midi looping. You can just enable looping and drag the end of the 4-beat measure to the right to duplicate it (elimates the copy and paste step).

Or get Ping as moskus suggested. (BTW, getting your 1010 back from repair will not eliminate the problem. The 1010 has no midi synth either.)
