i can't hear a thing

i just got a daw along with an Aardvark Q10 so i'm using the included Cakewalk 9 for now to see how it is
i have my keyboard plugged into 2 of the input on the Q10
so i'm not recording in Midi and i'm able to record in cakewalk
the only thing is i can't hear anything when i it playback
the Aardvark Q10 is the only soundcard in the Box

i even tried recording some vocal but still nothing
i should also add that the pc came with winXP which i'm NOT familiar with,and haven't been able to locate the window's mixer to check the properties

could someone point me to it
what gives ??!!

This could be due to any of a number of things. Some more info would be helpful.

Did you install the Aark manager software? This is "mixer" you need, not the Windows one. Are the mixer meters moving as you record or playback?

When you play the keyboard, are you hearing anything through the Q10 as you play?

When you record, are you seeing the Cakewalk record meters move (look in "console view", the one that looks like a mixer)?

Do you have the Q10 listed as both the input and output drivers under the Audio tab (under Options/Audio)?

Have you selected input #2 as your record source?

yes i hear the keyboard through the Q10 as i play

no i'm using input 7 and 8 for keyboard L and R , the ones with the guitar symbols

So when you record, you see the Cakewalk record meters moving, but not the Q10 mixer meters moving? That seems strange.

Ok, so if you see the record meters going on Cakewalk, that means it is getting a signal. That's good. When you finish the take and hit "stop", do you see the waveform drawn? You should see this in the main view (called clips view, I think).

One more thing to check - since you are using inputs 7 and 8, have you set up Cakewalk so that your armed tracks record from these inputs?

[stereo 7,8] is selected as my source for recording
as for the port i tried them all

when i record i see the Q10 mixer meters moving
it's when i'm playing on cakewalk i don't see anything on the Q10

Ok, that narrow's it down. If you are getting the waveform, at least you know you are recording a signal properly. The question is why isn't it playing back and why the meters aren't working.

As for the meters, do you still have them armed when you play back? Keeping the tracks armed won't interfere with playback, but it does make the meters operate as recording, not playback meters. So if they are armed it is normal that they aren't moving when you playback.

This still doesn't explain the lack of sound on playback. Take a look at your main bus meters (to the far right in console view). Any action there when you play back?
 
when playin back i see activity on the track recorded on but that's about it

will it make a difference if the board and the Q10 was connected by Midi
 
If you are not recording MIDI then it doesn't matter that your keyboard and computer are not connected by a MIDI cable.

If you are seeing the playback meters working on each track, but not on your main output busses, then that tells you where the signal is getting lost. Beneath each playback meter there are two buttons: one controls the inputs to each channel, the other controls where the playback signal goes. Make sure your playback (or output) for each track is going to one of the Q10 outputs. Also, make sure your faders on the main output buses are up.
 
we getting somewhere

All right

actually i was seeing the main bus meters and thought it was the track
but check this out i found a way to hear the playback
what i did is, in the q10 mixer i setup two presets
one for the keyboard where the monitors are routed to monitor L and R
and another preset for cakewalk where the monitors are routed to playback 1 for both speakers
i saved it and what i do is switch between preset (i e select cakewalk when i wanna hear what i just recorded.

this is not the most efficient way because the manual (q10's ) say it should one shoul hear the input and the playback when monitors are routed to monitor L and R

so if someone knows how i can keep from jumping from preset to preset , hit me back
