I cannot enter metadata

I have just completed my first project and have been trying to enter basic metadata when I render e.g. project name, my name etc. I enter information in the first line. I then click the second line to enter that required data there but when I do so, the entry in the first line disappears and so on. I note also, that in the metadata block (shown below), the APPLY box is greyed out. Also, if I enter OK after putting in information, the Metadata and Render boxes both disappear. I believe that I must be missing one simple action. Any comments welcome. Thanks, Brian

I think the type of file format that you are using for rendering will control what fields can be entered. Wav files don't allow the same fields as MP3's ID3 format so some fields may not be available. Common format is supposed to allow whatever fields are available for the file format, be it Wav, FLAC, MP3, etc.

AIFF supports more metadata tags than WAV.

I don’t use Reaper but I use a 3rd party app to add/edit metadata in bounced files if I’m going to distribute them. The one I’ve used for years is Kid3. I’m sure there are lots of them.

Thanks for your comments. I have decided to use either KID3 or Mp3Tag and add the metadata tags after mastering. Cannot see the point of Reaper including the metadata window if it does not work !! Brian

I have the solution. I need to press "enter" each time I enter a new piece of metadata. I was simply clicking into the next box and that is what made the original data disappear. Thanks for all you help. Brian

It does work. I'm not sure what you're doing wrong. I rendered a track yesterday, added Title and Artist to a Wav file, and everything was fine. Double click on the field, enter your data and tab to the next field. I even tried entering a PNG and VLC player showed the picture, although 32x32 PNGs are really small.

What version of Reaper are you using? I'm on latest 7.28

Is everything is working well with song metadata? Also, what metadata do you include?

I'm about to embark on this same process to master a release. I've definitely messed up the metadata to CDs in the past and had CD players not be able to find the tracks / etc. so I'm a bit paranoid about having it work. (Not, I guess, that people really use CD players these days anyway.... but physical media is still important!!!)

I don't worry about adding metadata for my tracks because I don't release music on CDs or for public release, but when I tried it, everything worked as it should.

I corrected my problem. What I was doing wrong in entering my meta data was forgetting to hit "Enter" after each entry. (Prior to this I has simply clicked into the next item when I had entered my data - that does not work). When I hit "Enter" each entry was inputted.
I have a question, however: does this metadata "stay" in the recording for both mp3 and wav files. Thanks, I wish you every success. Brian

What do you mean by stay in the recording?

When I try to look at the data simply using MS explorer only a very limited amount of the metadata is shown. I mean, can a third party, eg a radio station, or any user of the song, see ALL the metadata I have entered. This concerns me. Brian

That will depend on the program. I don't know that Explorer shows everything. Something like MS Media Player, or Audacity, or VLC Player will have the metadata available.

To expand on what Rich has said with my VERY limited understanding (take with a boulder of salt): it seems that there are several different encoding schema for song file metadata, which you'll see under the Supported by column in your original screenshot. So it may depend on which schema is being used by the end program. This seems to be why there are a few fields which seem pretty similar, or very niche.
