I built some coffins

I told the neighbors that I was building coffins but really its just bass traps. It pretty easy to do. If you have a basic knowledge of quantum physics you should do fine. My only mistake was using a cheap miter saw to cut the wood. The edges don’t line up properly. I made the traps portable so I can move them from room to room. Instead of mounting them to the walls I just secured a very thick piece of plywood to the back and sealed the edge with silicone. A word of warning... don’t take a piss after touching 703 fiberglass!

These things are portable but they are extremely heavy.

What thickness did you use on the plywood? Do you cover the front? What freq range do you expect to absorb?

I've got a bunch of 703 left from my panels and am just waiting for cooler weather before I start the next project.

The front of the trap is 1/4-inch plywood.
The back is 3/4-inch plywood.

Inside the trap there is a 1'' gap in front of the 703 and a 2'' gap behind it. The trap is completely sealed with silicone.
The surface is just bare wood since I don’t need to cover then with anything.

I believe this type of trap is designed to reduce very low freq. I will also assemble other traps with different dimensions to trap mid bas freq.

I have a feeling that not too many other people use bass traps since I don’t hear much about them.

I will probably put the deep absorbers in the corners and the mid- bass absorbers along the side walls.

Can you go into more detail about the bass trap? I have heard many people talking about them, but not quite sure how they work.

I dont know how to post a link but I think thats it.

I just think that room treatment is one of those things where most know about it but few actually do it.

I personally think that it is waste of money to spend 5 grand on a guitar, mic, preamp, recorder line up just to record it in a dead carpeted small room. I built bass traps and installed a wood floor in the tracking room. A large room with wood floor made a wonderfull difference in the clarity and ring of my taylor!

Damn Tex... Looks like you've got alot of work to do!

TJ,

Move to the front of the class!

And spread the word: Acoustic treatment is the "next big thing" in audio production because it's more important than almost anything else.

A bass trap - you stick it in the river with some bait in it and a bass swims in, eats the bait, but can't get back out. He's trapped!
Kinda like a trot line... only different.

:D :D

A bass trap temporarily stores bass frequencies much like a capacitor. So when you need them on a later mix, you can release them into the mix and enjoy well balanced audio.

:D

Seriously, it traps longer waves so your room doesn't boom or sound too bassy, thus allowing your ears to mix high, mid and low frequencies in a more balanced way.

If your mixes sound good on a boombox first shot, you probably need bass traps in your studio.
