I bought SE, what's going to frustrate me first?

I needed to spend my money on a soundcard, so went with Cubase SE. For $99 it seemed like a good deal. I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Just wondering if I made a mistake and I'm going to need to upgrade immediately? Or will it be enough to get me going until I can afford SL or SX? I'm going to be transferring files into it from an Alesis HD24 (via Firewire) and it will be used primarily for mixing. Thanks.

Obvious differences are things like amount of tracks, number of inserts, and Surround Sound support.

It will probably be fine for mixing.

uh oh

It looks like from the chart I only get 8 channels? That will suck immediately, as my tracking setup has 24. I wonder if that limit only applies to tracking - since I'll be importing the tracks, maybe I can go higher than 8?

How much does it cost to upgrade to SL?

I'm not sure about this, but I think that might be a limit on how many tracks you can record at a time. For mixing there is a limit to 48 tracks and unlimited midi.

Not sure of the cost to upgrade either but it must be buried somewhere on the website www.steinberg.net.

8 channels is wrong - I'm mixing a song with 16 right now on SE (like you, imported as .wav files) It just refers to simultaneous recording, limit is 48 for playback which includes mixing.

If you haven't used it before, the biggest frustration will be the learning curve and the stupid .pdf manual (the getting started book is useless). I had to go and buy a book from a shop (Cubase Power, which is sort of helpful but not brilliant).

the same people that make cubase power make cubase CSi video tutorials. Its great for a beginner in Cubase. 30 bucks for 3 hours of tutorials. I will say that it is for SL and SX so I am not sure how it will affect the use of SE when you try and use them together.

I thought Cubase Power was extremely helpful I een found it very applicable to Nuendo.

One thing I really notice is that SE only gets one layer of undo. If you're doing any sort of nonlinear editing that could be a serious drawback.

Best book I ever bought was Mixing and Mastering in Cubase SX by Craig Anderton...

Do you think Craig's book is a good reference for a newby SX2 user?

I do. It is based on SX 1, but it still applies. It comes with a cd as well so you can do a couple of projects with the book. Talks about everything from tracking and mixing to external controllers.
