Hi, I cannot figure this out!!

Okay, I have totally lost my stock soundcard on my Hewlett Packard. I have Win98. Its not that my stock soundcard is all that important but i want to use it for the midi. I have a M-Audio card installed for sound.

When I installed the M-Audio card, not thinking about anything i removed the stock card from the system. So now i removed the M-Audio physically and unistalled it.

Then i did a find new hardware search. It said it found no new hardware. My question is how can i get the computer to find the soundcard thats apart of the motherboard??

I downloaded and installed the correct drivers for the stock soundcard but it still doesnt install the card itself. I am at a lost on what to do from here, if anyone can help, i would be very grateful.

Thanks.
john

Stock soundcard ??? Does this mean onboard audio or is it a PCI audio card ?

ok now I see....apart of motherboard/ assuming onboard audio.
Did you check in device manager for any problems? Also under multimedia in control panel?
You can also check system tools>system info... assuming this is PC with Windows

The ones on the board can usually be disabled in the BIOS. That way the Device Manager will not even see it. So go back into the BIOS and enable it again.

In addition to the bios setting,is there a physical jumper on the board that disables/enables the onboard sound?I almost pulled my hair out trying to enable the onboard sound when I wanted to sell my old computer after removing the sound card because I had completely forgotten that I had disabled it by moving a jumper cap.................good luck

Thanks for all the replies,

No, I havent moved any jumpers so I am assuming I dont need to move them any further.

What i did was went to - my computer - properties - device manager - and removed both soundcards. I can easily put the M-Audio(PCI card) in and install that, but its the motherboard soundcard that came with the computer that i cant find.

I did the find new hardware and it doesnt find it. HP is giving me the run-around because i loaded WIN98 in it when it came with WINME, which always crashed on me. Now after the conversion i lost the stock soundcard and dont know how to get it back.

Im thinking maybe a soft restore?

thanks for the help,
john

Sorry, I missed that. How do I check the BIOS to enable it?

john

On most systems you get into the BIOS by hitting the DELETE key as it powers up. On some others you need to hit the F2 key.

I got to my BIOS screen but couldnt find where to enable the sound on the motherboard. Does it have a specific name?

I just checked the BIOS again and there is definitely no audio "enable or disable". Am i screwed?

Beyond checking in the bios to see if you can re-enable the card, try looking through any software that came with your computer.

I remember an old Packard hell that I had, where they hooked the CDROM to a non-standard address. You *may* be able to get the onboard sound installed by running an installation program off of the discs that came with the machine.

It's worth a shot.

I tried that but HP is dumb, they made three installation disks. I cant install any software that came with the computer unless i want to reinstall WinME. Then I would be back where i started. I like 98 much better.

I think my only alternative is to get a midiman or something. I didnt think you could just lose your soundcard thats attached to the motherboard. What stinks is that i dont want the sound part of it, but the midi gameport.

Thanks

It sounds as though the drivers you need was installed with the original ME operating system. When you installed 98SE you probably blew them out. If you can get the sound chip manufacturer and model number you could probably force the install of the drivers without actually detecting the software. But good luck getting that info from technical support (I don't think that info is in any of their scripts).

You may be able to search your hard drive for all .INF files and luck onto it that way. Or... if the restore discs have the windows install files saved as .cab files, there are utilities available to open and view the contents of these. You might find the drivers that way.

I bet if you restore the original ME from the discs that you got with the computer, the sound card will magically reappear, but then you're in ME again...

Nothings easy-

MOFO,

No doubt, I restore the computer with the ME disks the soundcard is there from hiding. And like you said so is ME.

I try looking for those files when i get home tonight after work. HP made those disk practically useless unless you want to restore the computer. It sucks.

HP did get back with me, they said they could not help me because the Op system that came with the computer is not the one that i have installed.

I told them that if ME didnt crash all the time on me, i would of left it alone, they did return an email, and tried to help but didnt work. I am sure im not the only complaint to them about ME.

Later,

Oh, i forgot to ask...If I do find the exact model and driver of the card, and install it, whats the next step in enabling the card? Or should it automatically be in the multimedia section?
