I am trying to understand SDIF in/out

Say I wanted to record several seperate tracks of audio; would i need to have a sdif in and out for each track? I am about buy a Lucid a/d (stereo) for conversion from my mic pre. I plan to use the lucid a/d to connect to the sdif in of my US 428..

I saw while looking for a/d's they have a/d's with 8 channels which is why I am curious on how the 8 channels would to transfered to the DAW.

any help would be apprieciated..

Yep, 8 channels of SPDIF requires 8 channels of SPDIF!

Like the giant breast in Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask), they usually come in pairs....

That is, I think there's no such thing as a single-channel S/PDIF interface. They are stereo only. I guess it's possible to have four independent S/PDIFs but I've never seen it. Usually more than two tracks use some other type of interface.

Yeah I found out that it is stereo, I also found out about the Toslink connection is the one that will route multiple channels on one fiber cable and then allow you to route them to indivual channels on your DAW....

Thanks Guys..

Yep, that is why DVD players use it to send Dolby Digital 5.1 Signals to receivers (5 discrete speaker channels plus 1 subwoofer channel).
