OK I want to record my band. I am poor. I figure I want to get a mixing board and run the out put into my computer. I am looking for a mixer that can 1 do that and 2 has 4 or 5 mic slots, and 3 line in slots.

1) what mixer should I get?
2) do I need anything else besides mics and cables for it? (like a power amp and speakers?)
3) does it have a line out that I can plug into my computer for compiling and editing?
4) what program do I need for recording multiple tracks at once?
5)what program do I need to compile all that after it is all done?

thanks
Casey

1. Although a few people may reommend the small Behringer mixers, don't waste your money. For a little more money, you can get a much less noisy board (Yamaha MG series).
2. If you're trying to save money, you can do your monitoring through computer speakers or through your home stereo system. It won't be as good as monitors, but good monitors are expensive.
3. Yes (1/4 in balanced)
4. I would recommend Mackie's Tracktion ($80). There are free programs, but I have never used them. Maybe someone else can recommend one.
5. Can also do this in Tracktion.
---Hope that helps.

If you are planning on recording multiple tracks at once you are going to need a soundcard with multiple inputs like the Delta 1010.

some ideas

i second the mg mixer series.
for soundcard with multiple ins tracertek.com are advertising a maya 44 mk2
i think its called thats new and even records at higher bit/sampling rates.
its the cheapest multiple in solution ive heard of.
if you are going multiple input and want a cheap multitracker i would suggest
you try the popular n track. from fasoft.com. read through other posts on this board and there is even a forum section devoted to it.
you will get excellent results with it. on the fasoft.com forum are links to peoples music. a lot of high quality music exanples.

....and monitoring with computer speakers wont make mixes suck as much as having a behringer board? LOL...ok

Ok, I thought it out. I am going to get a mixer.

mixer questions:
1) If I run 4 mics (drums) 3 line ins (2 guitars and a bass) and mix it in the mixer, can I just run a 1/4 stero plug into a 1/8 plug converter, plug that in my existing sound card and then record all the instroments into 1 track. then unplug all the instraments, hook some headphones (I have studio headphones) up to my computer and sing along with the music into another track. from there just mix them together?

2) did anyone understand that?

3)Ok, I need a mixer, 1 monitor (we are a small band so I only need 1), monitor cables, 4 drum mics, 1 vocal mic, 5 mic cables, 3 guitar cables... do I need anything else? like a power amp, mic preamps? I am trying to crate a list of what exatly I need to make this all work. so if you could be spacific.

thanks ALOT!

I am looking to not kill me wallet, how would the yamaha MG10/2 be for it, it looks like it has 4 mic inputs, and 6 line inputs for guitar and bass. (if I am wrong please tell me, I am a compleat noob at this whole thing.)

here is an ilistration of 1) in the post befor this. if it makes more sence.

gutar 1----------\
guitar 2----------| /------speaker
bass-------------| |------sound card <-----can I run a stero
drum 1-----------|----Mixer-----|---------monitor chord (1/4 to 1/18)
drum 2-----------| |--------- monitor 2 directly to this?
drum 3-----------| \--------speaker 2
drum 4 ----------/

/headphones
Vocal mic ----------Mixer--------computer

would that work?
if that makes more sence to you

thanks
