Im doing some Pre-production work on the first of a few songs I wanna record with a full band and I need some hints as to what might make this song work a little better..Structure ideas,Instrumentation tips( I think it needs an organ) are what Im looking for.

It's just a simple demo that was done in about 4 hours with canned drums etc. and me trying to play Bass guitar.

Thanks for any ideas.

Song is "Hypnotized"

Kramer... Man, very sweet. Can't wait to hear the final version. Great bouncy groove. And you ain't trying to play bass, you're doin' it, brother! I could stand to hear what a competent 'Rhodes' scholar could do; I can hear a groovy Rhodes sound bouncing along with the guitar... Love to hear some soulful, R&B/Gospel, female backgrounds helping out during the chorus... Aside from that, great groove, great format, great tune!:D

Hey Kramer,

Sweet work in progress. If you're planning on real drums, I think that will go a long way in giving the tune more of a spine. As it stands, I totally groove on the vox, nice backups!, the rhythm gits are laying it down as they should and the "feel" of the funk is soo there.
Organ, yes please. Maybe a prominent instrumental build climaxing into a git solo would break the arrangment up nicely.

You've a fine blueprint here. Hope the house gets built!

Theron.

Yeah, I can hear a chirpin' Hammond grindin' in there. Great vox. Real drums would be a must as well. Very cool.

Personally I'd go for a Rhodes sound to back up the guitar rhythm line with some blues scale bits without overdoing it in the verse, the Hammond sound would be great in the Chorus and for the first 8 bars of the intro I'd where I'd crank up the Leslie but build with some understated organ in the pre-chorus.
This tune is very imediate I liked it as soon as it started, good time blues rock the keys kind of write themselves
I look forward to the final version but I bet this would sound great live.

wooooooo weeeeeee..... cool song man,
Those are some great vocal and guitar tones. The guits are very live sounding. Mind if i ask what your guit. chain was (r. and lead, if you dont mind)? ....and the vocs sit in there perfectly... Very cool song, and an excellent recording ......awwww hell yea!!!!!

:D :D :D :D g

I agree with the real drums, B3, Rhodes and maybe even add a pinch of a clav sound through a wah peddle. Maybe some soulful female backups? Horns? It would be cool to hear what Lt. Bob could do with this.

Nice song anyway.

Man, it sux that I am at work, I cant wait to get home and hear this one!!!

Keep It Rockin!!!
The King

Ooooo!!! Lt. BOB!!! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

Thanks a lot guys!

Man I got a lot more feedback than I expected on this one.You all have some great ideas too that I intend on trying out and hopefully using! Thanks for the help people!

caretaker9,
The Rhodes is a great idea.I Know this song has to have some type of keys on it to make it fly. Some soulful female back-up singers is definetly a good idea! Thanks for listening and the advice!:)

theron,
Real drums are a MUST on this tune! The songs Im working on right now are just pre-production scetches to throw at you guys for ideas about things that can help the song out before we actually do the band recording. The guy that plays drums for me usually puts his on spin on all my songs after he listens to the demo(and he asks me how in the heck did I get out of time so many times with a drum machine:D)The build up idea leading into a solo is a good idea too.I'll work with some chords and maybe put a little bridge as the climax-build to the solo. Thanks for the help man!;)

Track Rat,
Thanks for the compliments man,Much appreciated!A hammond organ would hold down the foundation of this song I believe and real drums are gonna be used in the Re-record of this tune for sure.Im actually playing these little 3/4 inch pads on the Alesis-SR 16 by hand live so thats why the drums are so eradic:)Thanks for the listen!

Matt303,
Thanks for the tips on the rhodes and organ buildup in the pre-chorus.Im gonna give all of these suggestions a whirl and see what happens. Thanks for taking the time to listen and give advice!:)

Guernica,
Thanks for the compliments Guernica! They are appreciated.:)The guitar chain is actually pretty ugly.:DThe lead is played on an old yamaha strat copy that I bought for 279 dollars brand new in 1988 running through a Zoom GM-200 Amp Modeler thats set on a Combo-Amp Preset. The rhythm guitars are hacked at on a Les Paul Special thats plugged straight into my recorder.(I prefer to mic and amp and record the guitars but it was too late at night so I had to run direct). Thanks for the listen man!

erichenryus,
I hadnt thought of Horns, but yeah, they would sound great accenting certain sections during the Chorus and during the pre-chorus build.A funky clav would sound great in there too.Great ideas man! Thanks for listen and the tips!:D

King Elvis,
Dont get too excited Elvis,it's just a simple demo.:DFeel free to rip it apart if you do get a chance to listen to it.Thanks for the interest.:D

Thanks again to all those who took the time to listen, comment and give advice. It really will help me a lot in getting this song arranged and recorded the right way!:D

Kramer, excellent groove, good hook, and your voice is perfect for this. I listened for about a minute at lo-fi, then lost the connection but am downloading now to give a more thorough listen.
I really liked what I heard of the arrangement, especially the way the hook is re-stated slightly differently in the turnaround.
As stated by others, organ would sound great, as would real drums.
This is gonna be killer as it evolves, nice work.

p.s. I noticed in the song description you mentioned something about "organ...glued to the track." Be very careful when using "organ" and "glue" in the same sentence, some guys are sensitive about that due to unpleasant experiences with wives/girlfriends. :D

r&b rules!

Hey Kramer, sounds pretty darn good already! Your singing, the bass, the guitar solos. Definitely real drums, and I think Lt.Bob and his horns would be great, and I think some harmonica would be cool, too. Looking forward to the final version!

You guys fuckin crack me up with your "rough mixes" and "demos". If, six months from now, I can get a finished track to sound like this I'll count it a major victory.

Nice tune - great feel. I might (I emphasize the word might) have heard a flub in the bass. I've only listened once - first impressions are the most valuable for me, do I like the song? I do like the song! That old Yamaha can still sing, eh?

Once you get it all prettied up to your satisfaction you will share again? :D

I think its a hip song with a real cool groove going and the lyrics hold together real well too. Your demo captures the feel of the song well, which is what these kind of demos are for. I do them sometimes just to get a sketch of the song while its fresh in my mind.

Man, I'd like to hear a Meters sort of drum track in this one! Post the finished song!

LOL!Compared to a lot of people on this board and most of the musicians here in town it is a rough demo.:)You only heard one flub on the bass guitar?:D Im not a Bass player but I do try and hack away at it when Im the only Bass player around.:)
I will post the re-rcorded version when it's done. Thanks for listening and commenting.I appreciate it a lot!:)

Didn't read any of the above.

This is great... Great vocal layering... and I think the drums are great... they just need a bit of reverb here and there...

You have the ear bro!...

Theres great seperation in your mix..

Joe

mkg,
Thanks for the comments and taking the time to listen.I havent glued anything to my organ lately!:D

macle,
Thanks for the gracious comments man!I'll have to see what I can do as far as horns go.I dont have any computer based recording software so I dont know how I would be able to do the long distance recording but, I know Lt. Bob could sweeten this tune up with some horns!I hadnt even thought about harmonica.I think I have enough ideas to start recording the real version of this tune! Thanks again for the listen and comments.;)

crawdad,
Thanks for listening Crawdad.I do these demos for the same reason as you.To get a feel for a song with a little bit of instrumentaion added to it and harmonies.I write all my songs on an acoustic guitar so I dont really know how well they will translate until I record it.
Thanks again for listening and I'll post the finished version when it's done.:)

Thanks again everbody for all the help.Sorry If I forgot to thank anyone for listening.I got way more feedback than I expected.

Damn!Voxvendor actually likes my tune!:DI really appreciate the comments Vox.It means a lot coming from someone who's a lot more accomplished in the recording field than I am.Thanks again man!:)

cool tune, nice bass, vocals and leads!

I know your not really looking for input on sound but I didnt like the lead tone too much, but the playing was great.. there were a few crackles on some of the guitar.. I'm being critical to the point of paranoia though.. :D
It really is a good tune and recording..

I think organ would be cool.. Or perhaps the Lt. could have his way with her!

great job, looking forward to hearing the finish... though it doesnt need too much imop because it's already cool..

:D

Thanks for weighing in sam.I appreciate the kind words about the song.;)

You are correct sam! There are some crackles from the "chink-a-link" rhythm guitar caused by a hot signal.I tried to eq it out but it didnt make it past your critical ear.:D

You're also right about the lead guitar tone. It's got an old "skynyrd" type tone to it.I dont think it fits this song.

Thanks again for taking the time to listen!;)
