Hi posts about this may be a thousand here I know, I guess asking is a much faster way to obtain answers or getting redirected to popular answers would be fine by me.

I need to record my voice and a guitar for my demo, I'm in the process of choosing an affordable usb audio card with phantom power for now:

1. I saw many posts about the M-Audio Fast Track Pro Audio interface which has 2 front-panel XLR/TS combo jacks, what the heck are those? how do I connect a mic on that? do I need an adapter? why does the interface have those instead of normal XLR?

2. What about the Line 6 Studio UX1 or the Line 6 Tone Port UX2 in comparison with the one I mention above? I had a line6 pod once and sounded great are these. Does the Line 6 UX1 have phantom power?

Thanks a lot

Aiden

Combo jacks are simply a way of providing more connection options on a relatively small box. You can plug in either a standard XLR or an instrument on a TS jack. The connector has the normal 3 XLR pins around the outside but a TS socket in the middle (which is normally wasted space in an XLR. No adaptors are necessary.

The Line 6 UX1 does NOT have phantom power but the UX2 does.

Hi B, thanks for prompt reply...I see now...I zoomed the pic of the M audio and I saw exactly what yoy mean...Ha! err...nice.

Which one would you suggest between the m-audio and the UX2? I'm intrigued about the line 6 as it got pre amps but may be a useless thing for me...
Iis there anything else which would make me go for one instead of the other? Quality wise, latency, phantom power quality?
Thanks

I've never used a Line 6 interface so I can't compare them--but I've had good results over the years with M Audio products.

The Line 6 products are good, but are primarily designed as guitar interfaces. Yes, you can use mics with them. Are you trying to record an electric guitar or acoustic? If acoustic, you will get much better sound by recording it with a mic (or 2) then DIing it.
