Hum cancellation?

Hi.

Not sure if anyone can help me, but I am going CRAZY trying to figure this out.

I have a TASCAM 424MKIII which I am trying to mix some of my old stuff on.

I noticed when I try to play anything on it, that there is a low frequency *hum* coming from the channels.

Here are a few things I figured out from playing around:

1) If I am trying to play a stereo track back, I can cancel the hum by panning both channels to center.

2) If I switch the line out switch from L-R to MONO is cancels the hum.

3) If I gently place the unit perpendicular to the table, if stops.

4) SO, I tried out a couple other tape decks in my house... they ALSO HUM?!

Is my house plagued with magnetic fields? Is there anything someone can suggest to try to eliminate or at least lessen this?

I have a big archiving project to do, which involves mixing a lot of tapes I recorded on this unit.

Any help would be much appreciated.
