Windows XP 866mhz
380mb ram
40gb hard drive
M-Audio Delta 1010
Soundblaster Live Value (for the regular stuff)
Sonar 3 Pro, Sound Forge, whatever else...

Just a notice of warning to anyone using a Delta 1010 who has or is thinking about upgrading to Service Pack for Windows XP. After I upgraded I was having huge recording problems with Sonar.

At first I didn't realize that the problem was with SP2, so I tried reinstalling Sonar, to no avail. I was getting a few different errors when I tried to record...

  • dropouts
  • "disk full" errors (I had 25gb free!)
  • other general weirdness

I finally put it together that the problems began around the same time I installed SP2. So, I went ahead and uninstalled it, and then reinstalled the M-Audio drivers for good measure. I haven't had a problem since.

Moral of the story, don't get SP2. It seems to be nothing but problems as far as I'm concerned. And as long as you aren't using Internet Explorer (get FireFox), it's not even that necessary.

I am also running WinXp and SP2 with Sonar and a Delta 1010. I have had no problems at all to date.

Don't know if it is related to your problems, but did you exempt Sonar from DEP as recommended on the Sonar forum?

Also, what does the 866 MHz refer to in your post? If that is your CPU speed, it is below the minimum recommendation for Sonar 3.

Two days after installing SP2 the week before last my computer began to go crazy.

At first I thought that it was because it's a Dell laptop and was par for the course, even though I haven't had any problems in over a year.

But then the tech. support fellow got me up and running in about half an hour (well, the computer took that long to do a CHKDSK), and he explained to me that they had been having hundreds of 'phone calls about the same kind of problem from people with all kinds of different Dell's, and that it was down to SP2.

There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to the type of computer this can strike: some are fine, others aren't.

The moral of the story for me is to stay away from this build of SP2.

i'm a puter engr. now this is only a SUSPICION.
but i have a feeling that probably sp2 plays nicer on newer machines.
i draw to everyones attention that xp was really meant for much newer
machines. bear in mind. there have been subtle pc architecture changes
since p3 level machines. thus i i suspect people with newer 2ghz plus machines are the ones having fewer problems.
puchler - maybe you dont want to hear this but you might want to consider
a newer 2ghz plus machine WITH AT LEAST 512 ram.
xp seems to like RAM.
