best for rap?.....

put it on "high" or maybe "medium"

if that doesn't work, try 4

One small tip - keep questions informed but as concise as possible... people love to give stick :p

I'll suggest it before the others get their teeth into ya... go to the search section and type in "compressor". You can even narrow down the search to recording techniques.

There is more information already in the archives than any one of us could read.

... falling that, I agree stick it on 11 :D

Do yourself a favor- learn what the controls actually do, and then try to make it sound right by listening and adjusting accordingly. Like someone said, do a search and learn about the typical controls for a compressor...this board is full of that stuff.

you kids aren't really much of a help. would i be asking you if i didn't research already?

...sure that makes sense. If you had researched enough you wouldn't even have to ask.

I have a link at home that will help you. I'll post it later tonight. It is basically Compressor 101, I think it was on the drawmer website if anyone else has the link handy.

Do you have an understanding of what the controls do on a compressor? If you have any specific questions many of us would be happy to help you out.
Fire away.

why do people buy gear that they don't even know how to use?!

For the same reason they steal s/w they have no clue about............

What about stealing software they do understand? j/k, Let's not derail this thread.

I'm hearing distortion on the vocals and I think on some of the drum tracks as well. The levels are *really* high. It sounds almost like you recorded it with some overloading going on and then turned it down when mixing.

Peaking levels of around -12 to -6 are plenty hot, you don't have to be hitting zero all the time. If you are recording at those levels and are still getting all the distortion then something else may be amiss.

no the instrumental, the beat is something i downloaded off the internet. but my vocals is what i have to fix, what do u think i can do to fix it, let me take ap icture of my settings right now.
