Ok, I'll go early might as well get me out of the way. I feel like the actor without lines in every sport/tournament/contest movie that they always show competing in the big finale. I go up do my thing then more montage shots of 5 or 6 more competitors, then finally the hero comes up and just blows them away and everyone goes "Oooo". One last shot of all the other competitors looking crestfallen and sheepish.

I know any of you who have listened to anything I've done probably think I've got an IV in my arm that leads to an
fx unit and the truth is.. I love fx. I don't see anything wrong with using 'em if you like it. The only people
who are going to stop drop and roll when they detect autotune or Revoxoblastic or whatever are the 1% of mixing junkies like us. The other 99 are going to say "Hey that guys got a good voice" or "OH SHIT THAT SOUNDED JUST LIKE DARTH!". Do what it takes to get the best sounding recording period. Sure steroids may suck but hey i hit 98 homers last year and got a nice sneaker deal with K-France.

Anyway.. I do open mic on Sunday's, nothin but you a guitar and a little bit of house verb. Dat's it. I wanted to start recording the stuff I did there but I realized I'm improvising so much on my guitar jams that I'd never figure out the meter, structure, etc. it was like trying to draw a picture of moving water. In this case it's one of the more structured sections I grabbed. I approached this as if I was using tape. No shifting tracks, no splitting audio samples so I couldn't tidy up some obvious stuff like doubled vox, etc (unless I felt like a bajillion takes, no thanks!)

I did use envelopes because I don't have an outboard to physically mix and I also recorded multiple me's. I began this before the whole HRC thing began so there is verb on some of the backing vox after the 4:39 mark (SUE ME!). Other than that it's dry and how. Forgive me for it being long and moving like a dirigible.

Why not just grab a jack&coke and sit down at one of the dim smoky tables and join me won'tcho?:D

"The Deal"

Who sister on your own
when the cats roll home
Hey momma let me in
no those kids ain't home

well i been workin so hard
and i been prayin like i believe in god
and i been walkin down this dark and lonely road
im done im spent

I think she's fine well won't you help me meet her
I think she and I we'd make a good team
or so it would seem

She helps me pretend we're in love
and I help her pretend she is kind
well maybe i'm lonely but she's ain't as cruel as she seems
she helps me pretend everything's fine
and I help her pretend she don't lie
you don't know her
you can't judge her
I don't know what to do
me I'm no walk in the park
shot in the dark

What's your deally yo?

The Deal

This is the best thing I've heard from you this far...I really like it a lot. I was listening to it, but not paying attention really (as I was answering loads of mail because of a little holiday...did ya guys miss me? :) ) but it altered my mood completely. I love that...

Good one.

Now add some effects please! Fill it up!

Way cool! I love this song. Can't wait to hear the "fx" version, but I like this as it as, actually. Has a very barren, isolated lonely feel that really works with the lyrics.

Freakin' cool.

Chris

lol

listening...
ah!! click track nooooo, this sounds so good...gret singing.
Towards the end the guitar (great playing) got kind of a backseat, maybe needs a second guitar track in the second half?
...this is too cool!

great job

ah!! click track nooooo

huh?? ahh there's no click track, if you here clicks i think it's the pick hitting the pickguard of my acoustic

There's something panned far right that sounds a lot like a click track. I don't think it's intensional percussion because it's mixed so low. It comes and goes with a bit of hum as well.

listen close at around 0.38 for the first bit.

Yup you're right. That's the exact point when I activated the vocal mikes, the come and go is probably a result of the envelope action.

I had to turn up my monitors completely before I heard it (I'm quite deaf), that was a great catch.

I wonder if everything I've ever done has that. That was completely below normal audible levels for me. Uh-oh. I hear the metronome in Cakewalk clicking sometimes and I would actually often like to use a clicktrack but I could never figure out how to turn up the volume on the one in Cakewalk. LOL! Maybe it's always in there!

Cool song. Right before the second "who sister" I heard a click thing...

Where are the damn drums and bass? What the hell kind of song is this?

Not bad for naked.

Good song!

You've got some good note choice, and arrangement twists in there. Nice vocal work. Kinda reminds me of AIC in a few spots.

The guitar is a bit muddy, and the off center panning is distracting. I keep expecting another instrument to come in on the R to balance it out, but it never does.

I heard that triplet-feel hat thing on the right through most of the song. Was wondering what that was about.....

a little repetitive and lengthy / click and low hum on the far right annoy me.
guitar is cool esp the min9 voicing / nice vocals but a tad sloppy on some of the phrase endings, but hey , it's a naked scratch... nothin a few tweaks won't fix later / guit is panned to far left / Look forward to edited mix......gonna add some more instruments?

decent job so far,
Ralph

Khomp, I noticed you tried to PM me...but my PM box was full....it is empty now...

lmao...LOVE the intro ....

awesome vocals ...the guitar part is pretty sweet too...catchy ...man those harmonies are great ...if thats falsetto i wish you would tell m ehow you got that sound.....?...i try and try and it always sounds soooo thin...this is great i agree i like this better than any of that other crap you post...:D

if thats falsetto i wish you would tell m ehow you got that sound.....?.

yes it is..

I took an sm-57 and a Radioshacky-666 simultaneously tracked. The sm-57 was about a foot off to the side so I was singing parallel to it rather than directly into it. The Radioshacky was practically in my mouth the response on that thing is so poor.

I also tried facing away from the sm-57, anything not directly at it seemed to avoid the shrillness I get when I go right into it.

i agree i like this better than any of that other crap you post...

LOL!! Uhm.. thanks.. I think. I guess this means the last one of mine you listened to was the one where I was saying it would make you wanna punch your mom. :D I put up two sweet chock-full o' falsetto tunes since then but after Ped, jake, and craw listenend (god bless) they came and went. What can I say man I love my fx and I will never give up on the freak show stuff.

This is a very nice song. But what's that weird sound in the right speaker? Sounds a bit like a hihat or something...

Very good singing!

No it took me forever to figure out what it was...

  Khom="retawwded"

I had a second set of Polk computer speakers plugged into my secondary soundcard for video games that weren't compatible with my Aardvark (Age of Mythology, go figure!)

I go to track something this morning and I hear it. I turn the monitors off and I STILL hear it. In my PC Control Panel I have the Aardvark declared as the playback device and yet Cakewalk is still sending the click track signal to the other soundcard (wtf?).

I tracked this before I learned how to set tempos and such in Cakewalk so the default new project tempo is 100 bpm. What you're hearing should be a 100 bpm click track which doesn't even match the tempo of the song!

nice vocal tracking! hot, but not clipping, very even volume.

the guitar panning was distracting. and that clicking in the left is weird.

I dig the gotcha at the beginning.:D Cool tune but the guitar to one side didn't work for me. Vocals are very good. Excellent layering. At the end were you cheating again? I hear verb (you didn't get that from singing in the bathroom did you?)

At the end were you cheating again? I hear verb (you didn't get that from singing in the bathroom did you?)

yep, it's verb. If you'll read my original post you will see me explaining I had started this before the HRC started and that there is verb on backing vox after the 4:39 mark. Sometimes I save dry copies, sometimes I don't. Depends on whether I thought the tracks was unlikely to be duplicated in performance.

the guitar panning was distracting

Yeah, I agree with everyone on this but I swear it wasn't my fault! It's that stupid Record Animation feature in Cakewalk that keeps getting me.

I'll adjust the faders to the way I like them and then when I stop and rewind, Cakewalk somehow remembers them as they were at a certain point in the future and resets them all. Maybe this is useful if you know what you're doing but right now it's driving me crazy.

that intro rocked:D

very cool song....i like the vocal sound you got on this.....

i like your voice alot...and thisd style fits it to a tee......

the panned guitar may be a little distracting listening with nearfields, but how many people do that besides us...i put it on my stereo, vegged out on the sofa with a Little Debbies brownie, and just grooved out.....

you kept my interest for almost 7 minutes so consider that a major accomplishment........

I`ll hear this tomorrow. I`ll have to put it on and go mow grass while it dl`s. 56k sucks.
