well, I know I won't get around to track a tune of my own by the 30th so I'm putting up a Wed. Nite Jam tune, which is recorded dry. I built a mic hanger out of pvc pipe and fittings that holds 3 mics and is attached to the ceiling, about 7' up. I us 2 v67 mics panned L and R and a 603s in the center that is panned center. There is 2 guitars, a mando, fiddle, bass, keyboard, going on as well as vocals. We just gather around and play. The tune is long because I save them with most of the banter before and after the tunz. Sorry about that, but the guys love listening to that stuff as much as the tune itself, and there is more breaks as we usually get into it as the tune evolves, taking turns playing and jamming, and just having fun. Enjoy! Recorded 5-14-2003.

A live recording without any tweaking! :D

Makes you feel like a fly on the wall. This is really cool to just sit back and take a listen ... you guys sound like you're having a good time, probably just knocking back a few brews and playing through the night.

Great stuff! I guess, mix wise, the entire piece sounded like it couldv'e used a boost in volume...kind of sounds like the recorder is set up in the middle of the room with one, maybe two mics so you really get that Sitting on the Porch home recorded feel...

:)

Excellent version and recording!I dig all the friendly banter.LOL.I used to have a lot of cassettes from parties that recorded EVERYTHING.LOL....a lot of good stuff on those tapes that not related to music.:D

Good job!

thanks fellows,

boydrj, correctumondo, food, brews, herbs, friends, and music. every Wed. nite. and, I just turn the stuff on and we play. I can boost some stuff, but decided to let it roll naked for the HRC.

Kramer, some of the stuff I've saved this year has been classic. It's always the bomb to sit around and listen to what happened along the way. There's always sumpin that'll make you laugh. And ain't that what it's all about? Having fun and being happy.

Which one's you talking? :)

Nice job recording the room. And kudos for the effort of creating that mic stand!

So of course it would be proper to capture the lead vocals toward the center. BUT, and especially since this is a cover, I really like the slant the panning puts on it.

Ahhh the harmonies just kicked in....VERY NICE. And adds to what I just said about the panning. This is a terrific live recording. You guys are terrific!

This is a great example of what this challenge is about.

....the bullshitin in the begining MAKES this song....thats great .
great guitar sound ....built a "mic hanger"...LOVE IT...man i can smell beer on this on... harmonies ...SWEEEET ...you got some great vocalists there....you all fight for who gets to sing lead dont you?!?!?:D ..."WHUA"...right before the guitar break..hehehehe...nice. its a bit weird to hear the lead vox off to the side but ...for a live jam ...who cares...it must be nice to have a bigger room to play in....i mean i play in a "spare" bedroom...about the size of a closet.....mandolin cool...

great stuff....trully what music is about..and unlike most "jam' stuff i hear you actually have talent and great vocals...

Dan, as always my friend, the only fault I can find is that I wasn't there too.:D

This reminds me of my bluegrass days.:)

Nice clean recording, and good playing/singing. Sounds like fun!

Thanks for sharing!:)

thanks again folks, maybe after the May challenge slows down, I'll throw you peeps a few more from the same nite. There's only 16. he he he

SLuiCe, thanks friend, this is close to the sound we used to gig, only missing the banjo. The harmonies. That's the ticket.

Bucket, it all depends on where you end up standing on any given nite. And sometimes we move around, which of course, changes everything.

Track, I've said it before, which ever one of us here in the clinic, wins the power ball for like 100 mill or sumpin, must cover any and all who want to buy our own town, and do this EVERY nite. he he he he he

Brane, sharing is the greatest thing about this site. I would, and do, share my music with anyone, anywhere. It's pure honest fun. And if someone walked in one nite, and said they were some big deal agent, wanted to sign us up, and make some money, we'ed tell'em to sit down, have a cold beer, and listen to this shit. And then laugh til snot runs out our noses.

Thanks again fellows, and as always, the boys and gals here will hear all your comments.

Dan

I swear I thought I heard an autoharp in there at times...

and also....you dragged the melotron outta the closet too??

so when someone plays a clam, I don't hear any face slappin!!!

lotsa yankee accents in there too... I hear dat...bein' a kentucky boy myself;)

That sounds sweet, Dan. It's got a great feel to it. The background vocals are really cool. Next time just stick the singer in the middle ;)

Do you have a version of Surreal recorded like that?

mixmkr, that's cause we all play a clam. and yankee accents. everyone here was born in Va., except my wife. and I mean southern Va. he he he he

Tex, like I said, folks move around during the evening. I have thought of x's on the floor, or names, where to stand. but that would kill the fun. and do I wish I had Surreal or any of my tunz recorded like this. we haven't got around to that.

thanks dudes. For the listen.

Dan

This is great. Wonderful atmosphere.
The weather is awful here as I'm writing this, kind of depressing, but this track really shines a warm light in my room.
It is not the kind of music that I usually listen to but I really like this version. hats off.

LoL! You guys sound like a buncha hillbillies!! Whut y'all dang dang.. Hillbillies that can sing, great job. I don't know what Metallica was thinking man they need to leave this stuff to the sarthernars.

For live and a couple of mics sounds great. The panning turned out real nice. It really separated the instrumentation. I think the keyboard guy who goes after the fiddle got gyped a bit, he sounds a bit lower to me.

One last "UNHHH!"

man I live hearing stuff like this....reminds me of home.....you did a great job of capturing this performance cleanly and very well balanced......unless one has tried, you just cant appreciate how good this is....well done......

Man that was fun !! I felt like I was there with you guys.

Dennis

christiaan, thanks friend, and I know how you feel, we haven't had a full week of sun in over a month. rain, rain, and more rain. I'm glad this made you feel good.

Khompewtur, we is hillbillies. he he he he and Perry is the "unhhh" dude, says it all the time. The keyboard dude has only sat in a few times. He's been coming on Wed. nites for a few years of and on, but never brings his keys, usually plays the shakers or something. He's big in a very good local cover band that plays around almost every week-end. We constantly are after him to turn it up. With the way I record these nites, it's up to him, since he's playing thru an amp. The first couple times he came it was like he didn't even have it on. What you hear on this one is like nite and day. We're hoping by time he's sat in a few more times he'll get more confidence, and turn it up. It's kinda strange, his band has reg. practice, because they play tunes as close as possible to the actual song. But he has a little trouble just jamming out, but he's working on it. Shit, we only play 3 chords, how hard can it be? he he he he Thanks for the listen.

Gidge-mo, thanks a lot. It's the highlight of our week, to get together, play, party, and have fun. Well ok, we just get drunk and cloudy. he he he he

Dennis, hey man what's up? Damn I was drunk. I thought you WERE there. I swear someone said where's Dennis, and I told them you were pissing out back, and then another tune started, and well, you know, gone again. he he he he he

Thanks fellows.

Dan

This is just golden, man! Makes me wish I had been in the group that night doing some pickin'. The real charm of the whole thing is you can tell everybody was having a really great time. Recording captures the live thing so well--dry is the only way with something like this one. I think you mentioned your bluegrass version of this a while back. I'm glad you posted this. WHoa! I like the way that fiddle slides into the last chord! This is what music used to be about before there was a music business--people sharing and having fun entertainling themselves. You guys are definitely getting back the old time feeling.

thanks crawdad, it's because we eat jalapenos with our cheese and crackers every wed. nite. (just read your other thread) he he

We've been doing this for around 28 years, in some form or another. This one nite was kinda rare cause the whole former "Spencer Hill Band" was there. And this nite was as close to our former giging sound as I've heard in many years. The only thing missing was the damn banjo. My pal David was, and is, a great banjo picker, but took up the mando a couple years ago, and I started playing the guitar when this change occured. Man, I miss the banjo, and miss playing the mando, which was my main axe for years and years. I gotta work on this, and get the old boy to play the banjo some more. (and I'll get to play the mando some too) And I too wish you had been here.

Thanks,

Dan

sat you talkin' bout the tater chip's?:D I would expect nothing less from you, dan!!!!! great freakin stuff!! this is what it's all about!

Keep havin fun, Dan!!!! HELL YEAH!

Peace

Rick
