Rock Steady
On behalf of my buddy and partner dafduc and myself.... It`s done!!! :)

this has been a tough one for the old boy here, but we made it in August at least. There`s tons of disclaimers but I`ll just say that I didnt bring the music submix up enough and the vocal is kinda loud. Drums are a little hot too, but I was pushing the limits on the deadline.Hope we dont hurt your hearing..... Here ya go Daf... :)

Hmmm... very nice... clean... lovely sounds... the ambience on the snare's a bit different. WOW... TOKI? Did you get a sex change? :D Didn't think you could sing in those high registers ;)

This has an almost analog-y sound to it... phat... w/exception of the drums... which are pretty good anyway.

Cool chord changes & such... the tower-of-power... horns, etc... not really hearing
anything distracting in the mix... very smooth... nice, slow drive... well... the
snare roll's a bit mechanical at (3:45) or so... no biggie :)

Nice noodling around 4:00...

Betcha Kenny programmed the drums :D Those sound like "Kenny" rides after about 4:30.

Ah... a gospel-y number... nice song...

K... you guys gotta break this down... who did what... obviously K. on bass & daf on
keys...

Muy excelente, gracias, de nada, por mucho gusto! :D

That's one fine snappy tune you fellows put together there!

I haven't heard so much Cristian based music since Jim and Tammy were on the air but, I actually like what you have put together there.

The vocals do seem a bit over the top at the head of the track but they seem to level out latter on in the mix.

The drum playing/programing was first rate!

The horn and organ as well was also played with good confidence.

The bass playing was top shelf. Very creative and interesting through-out the song. The level seemed a bit loud in the mix though.

Over-all, a very fine effort indeed. There is very little to distinguish this recording from anything I would expect to have come from a completely professional recording studio with true session players laying it down.

Very nice, indeed, gentlemen. :)

very unique sound for a posting on this board.......i can say i don't think i've heard anything well done like this in a similar style here........very nice

great drums....... nice sounds

Wow! What a dynamite production. Bass very smooth and in the pocket. Daf, loved your piano groove, and organ stuff.

Who were those women?! Man, that was some nice singin! Makes me wanna testify!

Great job guys, enjoyed this one very much. Only thing it needs is a sax ride by Lt. Bob!

Gee.......very cool....excellent vox..........you bastard.....keeping those voices to yourself all this time...;)
A good groovin' bass line as is the norm for Toki.......good keys.....I'd like the keys up a little....both organ and piano.........bass is about loud enough........lead vox is a bit too loud but the backgrounds are fine where they are....mainly turn those keys up.

Too cool.....too cool.........

Great tunage guys! I do have to agree with the good Lt. here, crank those keys! Everything else sounded first rate to me. I too would like to know who did what... break it down for us. Very well put together collab, you guys did a great job.

And the bar gets raised yet again - this kicks serious ass!
I started mentioning parts one-by-one but what's the point? This is a total package - 100% right on the money.

I'm shocked and awed!
Can I get an AMEN??

Nice bottom. Good groove. Great vocals. Great horn arrangement.

Great collab!

Jeez! 10.3mb on dial-up.

Ok, downloading now. :D Be back later (like Thursday, maybe).

nice collabo guys.. good vocals.. they seem a bit loud as well as the bass drum.. also the keys are too low at the end.. Bad edit @2:06..

good performances here.. I like that end jam but the solo is so low I can barely hear it.. the drums do sound mechanical at times like repeated cymbals crashes and rolls, but the sounds are all good! nice job guys!!

Can I get a witness!! :D

Nice stuff, guys. Nothing to complain about here. Bass, keys, vox are all great. I'm assuming the horns are midi, but very well done. Who did the programming and what samples were used?

The drums have a nice big sound also.

My only complaint - 10.3 megs and the 424 kbps encoding. Give a guy a break. :)

Hey guys, I appreciate the listens and comments. This was about the toughest challenge for me so far. The bed was actually an older thing I had posted several months ago. I sent it to Daf and he liked it and had some lyrics already. He sang a version with harmonies. He did an asskicking new piano and organ part on it, two saxs, two trombones, and a trumpet. He also did the idea of drums from a stoptime to bring it back for the reprise section for the ending. I got his tracks a few weeks ago but with busy at work, a back injury, and a bout with the flu I was like knocked down big time. I worked in bits on it lining tracks up and rudimentary track mix. I added the bass track, drum fills, another rythym piano, and some sampled brass stabs and riffs to compliment his horn section (tried to think like Stevie might think) Friday night. We had discussed a friend of mine that I had worked with before for a few yrs, singing it along with a couple of girls that work with her, I called her and she was on for it. The soonest they could make it though was 4 pm Sat afternoon and I had a gig Sat night. I finished tracking them at 5 and still had time to get ready to go play but not to mix.
I started back mixing on this around 3 Sunday afternoon and wrestled with it until around 9:30 last night.
Daf will have to tell you what he used since i really dont know all of it but I`ll share mine..
The drums are a bluejay drum font thru a Timeworks Eq and Compressor with a tiny bit of verb.
The bass is my Washburn 5 string thru an ART tube compressor into the Tascam mixer.
The accompanying brass section is from a creative sound font with anwida verb tru the timeworks eq and comp.
The rythym piano is a roland XP soundfont.
The vocals were recorded in 2 tracks with a Shure SM97 condenser thru the ART Comp/preamp. One primary and one background track. I doubled the backing tracks and opposed the panning at about 10% L/R and added a small touch of verb above 2k.
I had lost a set of phones and only had two, so two of the girls had to share a set when they cut the harmonies.
I tracked the externals on the Tascam m30 into a soundblaster.
I mixed internally using Sonar 2XL.
There are a few mix issues I`m going back to correct such as the level on the drum roll before the jam, raising the instruments level across the board, backing off the drum part a bit, and the bass down a touch, and that glitch Sam caught. I would have done it earlier but I was out of time to meet the deadline and I`m still tired from it today here at work.
I appreciate you Dach', Sam, Charva, fprod, MC gitarz, buck my bud, Steve, twist, powderfinger, Ghost, and my sweethearts Chad and Joro... yall make hard learning worth it. 'makes me happy as hell if yall like it.. :p

Dach' sorry it was so big and the high bit rate. I told Winlame to do extreme and it turned out that rate. I remember 56k...

Jay out of town and wont be back till tommorow but he said go ahead and post it. Im in hopes he`ll be pleased.....

Just walked in the door from a few days in Frankenmuth (cf: RWhitey's "We Got Married" on HRComp II - if you ain't bought one yet, shame on ya...), so I haven't heard this yet.

Since the download's gonna take an HOUR AND A FREAKIN' HALF (geez, Kenny!), that gives me time to talk about what I did:

Kenny & I were kicking around what to do, and I gave his bread-n-beans groove a listen. I'd been listening to a bunch of Dr. John and Ramsey Lewis recently, and pretty soon this Dr. John - style melody started running in my head. I went with it, eventually ccoming up with the "Lift up your hearts to the Lord" lyric.

I needed something to go with that, and finally realized that "lift up your heart, lift up your voice, rejoice" is a line from an old Charles Wesley hymn, so I yanked out the hymnal, found ther hymn, and started jamming on the lyrics against Kenny's backdrop, eventually they made themselves fit, in a way that actually sounded pretty natural. So I demo'd it for Kenny, replete with a lameass Ramsey Lewis style solo, he thought it was a good idea, so he went along with it.

If you've heard bread-n-beans, you know that what I played was basically Kenny's piano and (especially) organ parts, just with a bit of a stream-of-consciousness thing - and played straight through, going for a live feel.

Piano is the mda-Piano freebie VSTi, and organ is the infamous B4. Horns were freebie Cyclick samples from Computer Music mag - I did some tweaking to get them a little less mechanical sounding.

Now I'm gonna wait for my download to finish so I can listen to this thing.

This has been a true collab from the get-go... Kenny's groove inspired my melody, his keyboard parts were the kernel for my parts, he took my arrangement and ran with it, his girls sang the harmonies I put together (I think) - it's been a couple of months of give and take --- and never was heard a discouraging word:D . Kenny was a breeze to work with, kept an open mind about everything. It's been a real pleasure working with my man Toki, and a real groowth experience.

I hope Charles Wesley approves - this is pretty far from the Darwall hymntune his text is usuallly sung to...

Wow! Ken! REALLY nice work with the extra horns! And where'd you get Taylor Dayne on such short notice?:D

The added piano is nice too - unobtrusive, improved the groove. You've got that touch, man. Excellent job.

I think I'd like to have heard the three-layered "lift" in the chorus - or if there were only one, one that started on the 1st beat (hence overlapping the end of the verse) - as it stands it seems a little inorganiic - but you used exactly the lead line I sent you, so it was probably just a communication thing. It's a minor point - it was great to hear a real singer on this...

Great job, man. Strong bass work, drums were tight.
