I just found this forum and boy am I glad that I did! Over the last 6 months or so, I've started putting together a little home studio and I think the people at my local gear shops are getting really sick of all of my questions and hums/haws over every little purchase. There are so many options though... how can they expect anything else?

So far, my little setup consists of the following:

Behringer 4 channel mixer (for powering mics)
Boss BR600
Audio Technica AT2020
Audio Technica AT2021
Audio Technica AT4040
Rode M3
Apex 127 (Great for backing vocals!!)
and various dynamic mics of questionable quality. lol

Not a bad beginner's mic locker, if I do say so myself!


I'm looking forward to bugging you all with my questions and *hopefully* get some knowledgeable answers with a few less rolling eyes. haha.

I love sarcasm - when it doesn't lead to flame wars, that is. Heck, sometimes even a flame war can be hilariously fun!

You did a whole CD on the BR600? Myself, I'm starting to get really annoyed with the device and the whole "you can only work with 4 mono tracks at a time" thing. I thought that virtual tracks would be a godsend (before this, I was still rocking an old tascam cassette 4 track) but now I'm thinking I'll give up my old school ways and just take the dive into computer recording.

Depending on how you are recoding, yes, it can be limiting - you can count it as 5 (or 6) mono tracks, though, just treat 5/6 as a mono track, and 7/8 as one on your first bounce (assuming you don't have a stereo track recorded, in which case nevermind).
As I'm doing all the parts myself its pretty easy to lay down rhythm tracks, then vocals and leads, then using 2, 3 or 4 bounces, bring it all together. I can certainly see how being able to mix all the tracks in one pass, no bouncing would make it eaiser, though.
